I am either going to get the i5 or i7, but definitely be putting in an ssd

Yeah, I'm waiting for the OCZ Vertex 3 to come out since it's SATA III and is getting raging reviews. But definitely expecting it to fly once I get it. However...Intel released an announcement today on their new SSD's....

my problem is that I dont know how to install an ssd in the macbook pro, so was just going to do a customized macbook order from apple online.

I can tell that a lot of you guys weren't around for the mirror-door G4 PowerMac.

LoL.

Quite possibly the loudest (unbroken) computer ever built that wasn't intended to live in a server closet.

It's pretty easy. Look for a tutorial either on ifixit.com or somewhere but it definitely is easy and you'll save money. However I have been seeing reports of a 128GB option from Apple for $90 which is good, but you can probably get a better aftermarket SSD that's a better deal for the money.

which 13in model do you have, i5 or i7. I feel like alot of people are having a problem with the i5s for some reason.

I noticed that too. I have the i5 also. It also seems like the people who are NOT having problems with their 2011s didn't own the 2010.

I had the 2010 so I can't help but compare. The 2011 is sweeeeet, but this loud processor and drive head parking noise is getting to me.

I guess I'll head on over and have a drink at the Genius Bar.

keep us posted, maybe try the 13in i7 and see if you still get the problem.

I have a 13" i5 and I have to run Cinebench to get the fans on to where I hear them--usually it is dead silent. And as someone who has been one of those hyper-picky audiophile types, I notice sound/noise and pay attention to it.

I don't hear a thing. Don't hear the fans at all. And since I have a Solid State Drive, it make zero noise.

see as you (i assume) opened the case to install the extra RAM yourself.

Did you notice anything different about the SSD installation that would make it harder to upgrade?

What brand is the SSD ?

If you could do some read/write benchmarking of the SSD, that would be great.

edit: just realised i assumed you have the apple SSD, when you probably installed your own.

I have the OCZ Vortex 2, that I installed myself. Nothing has changed. The installation process was very easy. It took me 5 minutes to take the HDD out, and put the SSD in. Very easy.

And If anyone could tell me how to do the read/write benchmarking, I will be more than happy to do it.:)

Here's mine of my new 15' MBP. Just using iTunes and Safari.

You can't compare the 15" to the 13" because:

1. The 13" are dual core vs quad core on the 15"
2. The 13" only has one fan vs dual fans on the 15", and
3. The 13" unibody is smaller than the 15", and all MBPs use the unibody as a heatsink for cooling.

My 2010 is louder when running games only because I use SMC fan control to spin up the fan to a minimum of 4500. This keeps it quite cool and it's not loud enough to hear over the talking of my friends or music I may be playing.

I have the mbp in my sig and i havent really put it under load yet .. but .. at idle my fans are running at 2k rpms and i can hear them pretty well and its getting annoying. Even my 2010 i7 15 i couldnt hear a thing.

Some other things I have noticed is my trackpad sometimes doesnt register and also my ethernet seems at times to just stop working.

I'm looking into the i7 in the refurb store, though I keep telling myself why not another $130+ and get the base new i7 with quad.. how do you like your i7 2010? Does it get loud during gaming sessions?
