i need to order a MBP on or before march 10. you think i should:

1. order a refurb 2.4 now
2. wait for a refurb newer model
3. order the base model at educational discount

please please help me out

GO with the student discount and purchase the base model!

refurb 15" 2.4 MBP with old chip cost: $1,649.00
new 15" 2.4 MBP with Penryn chip (faster) with student discount: $1799.00
That only a $150 difference. GO with NEW! <---

The difference between new and refurb are usually $150-$250. That's a week's pay. I'm not bashing the refurb, sometimes they are a better deal especially of you cannot get the student discount.

Here's my dilemma:
$1449+110 sales tax=1560 for 2.2/2gb/120gb/no multitouch refurb
$1799+tax for 2.4/2gb/200gb/multitouch new (student discount)

What do you guys think? Besides for the HD, clockspeed, graphics RAM, and multitouch, what's the advantage of the newer one? Does penryn give better battery life? Are there any other architectural changes?

EDIT: Found a better deal: Amazon: $1752-150 rebate-50 (from amazon credit card cashback)=$1552 (no tax) for NEW last model.

aren't the macbooks the regular price in the refurb store? Did they really drop that much?

me too

I have been waiting and watching for weeks now hoping for an update. I almost pulled the trigger on Sunday for a refurbed Blackbook for $1299. I read the rumor update about this Tuesday and decided to wait. I snagged the same Blackbook this AM for $1049!

I couldn't resist when I saw the new price... amazing deal.

A week's pay! Holy crap you need a better job! lol

refurbs are awesome. I hope my friend doesn't look at the store. She just bought a MB on my recommendation and asked if she should wait or buy now and I told her not to wait like I knew what I was talking about

My wife and I ordered a 2.4 15" MBP SR and iMac 2.4 20" (both refurb) last week. Both machines have been thoroughly gone over and tested...they are awesome!

Called in today and received $500 credit due to the price drops :D

These machines were the 5th & 6th Macs in our family, but the first refurbished ones we have tried.

The only thing "missing" from the Mac experience was the nifty retail packaging. We are very happy with our decision.

i decided to go for the 2.2 refurb, $1610 for the MBP + case + tax!

what an awesome deal, can't wait :D

the store should be updated....

WOW. Those 1,299 MBP were gone in a flash.

Not sure it matters to you, but a friend of mine recently (2-3 weeks ago) got a 2.2 MBP from Amazon and it only came with Tiger, not Leopard. Just a heads up.

what time is the store updated? i'm looking to score a really cheap, older model macbook to play with

i meant the daily update time

Early in the morning, or late at night, depending on your location. I can't remember the exact time, but it's something like 2 or 3 a.m. PST.
Edit -- and on Tuesday to Saturdays only, you won't find them on Sun. or Mon. mornings.

Graphics RAM is insignificant for most people. If you have 128 MB or 256 MB, that is quite a bit of vRAM, so what you want should be based on your needs. For my own use, I don't think I'd see any difference between 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, or 512 MB, and so I don't make my purchasing decision based on the video card.

Multitouch? To me, it's not a big deal at all, but it may be a nice little feature for you.

The clockspeed is faster, but the new MBP you're looking at may have 3 MB of cache memory, while the old one had 4 MB. I don't think you will see a (real) performance benefit from the new one. You may see a slight difference in battery life, though.
