One issue that prevents some Apple stores to do the swap on a online order being picked up at the store, is that their system does not immediately update the picked up order. This is why they could not do so when I picked up the order yesterday. They suggested I return today when the picked up order is on the system and they can easily do the in store return, and credit you for your configuration, and then resell you the watch with the band you desire - if more, you pay the difference, if less it is a credit to the method of payment. Luckily for me in Los Angeles, the Apple store is less than 10 minutes drive with easy parking. Neither yesterday nor today was the store particularly busy. Today I was told the next available specialist could take 30 to 40 minutes, and my named was called in less than 10 minutes. I did overhear a sales rep saying they are almost out of all watches, so maybe this is why they are not that busy. They had no iPhone 13s, no iPad minis and no watches.

Ohhhh - I bet that's exactly right. Friday morning one of the store staff was trying to get some part of my transaction to show up in their system and after about half an hour gave up (with a lot of apologies). There are several stores close to where I live. I'll give that a shot some time this week.

So some of you get this done in 5 minutes, but it took me 50 minutes in OKC.
They made me unpair my watch then do a return and new purchase. Then they decided the only needed to do a non-receipt exchange since the original band with my SS had no individual coding. That procedure involved maybe three people trying to figure out what to do with me.
The only good news is that I got to trade in my iW 6C which is a relief since I will be out of the country when that trade-in kit shows up.

Picked up my Nike edition today and would not let me swap the band for a different color… store manager said that because mine was an online order I would have to return the AW and reorder it with the color I want as the orders come prepackaged.

Not a big deal though, but I guess it depends a lot on the store.

These are the few things that really annoy me with apple stores. They need to be consistent with policies. It shouldn’t be the luck of the draw on who’s helping you. Hearing some people get simple things handled easily and others get denied is very frustrating. I had this happen to me when my iPhone X battery expanded. Some got free replacements, some had to pay full price out of warranty replacement cost, and I had to pay for a battery replacement. Everyone should get the same.

I am not sure how others are able to swap bands during pickup. I was at an Apple store 2 weeks ago and was picking up a AW7 SS Graphite with Abyss blue sport band. I wanted the graphite milanese band and the system refused to accept the swap. Given that the box clearly stated the case and band, I would have had to buy the requested band separately. I walked out and waited the next week to actually buy what I wanted when it became available.

This didn’t happen for me. The guy was apathetic and didn’t care even after I mentioned this post on Macrumors…

Like all customer service situations, it depends on who you get.
