So, for a huge amount of people Yosemite is going to be just a new look, great. They should have ended the WWDC presentation with "oh, and almost all of these new features won't work on most of the Macs out there".

"Almost all" won't work? So far I'm aware of airdrop (iOS to Mac) and this. That's "almost all"?

BT 3 and BT 4 have the same speed... BT4 is low-power. Is there some other necessary feature? Yo no say.

One 2013 imac and one 2011 MBP.

YOu win some, you lose some.

However, in the past many USB add-ons have been supported by new tech, but sometimes with a special hack. I would not be surprised if a BTLE USB dongle worked but required a hack to get it to connect.

This guy got it to work?

http://www.atpeaz.com/index.php/2012/using-unsupported-bluetooth-4-0-usb-dongle-with-os-x/

Probably not. Apple may limit Handoff to built-in bluetooth only.

There's already a precedent with PowerNap: it only works with MBAs and rMBPs that have always shipped with factory-installed SSDs. There's technically nothing preventing my 2009 MBP 13" with Samsung SSD from having PowerNap (since its firmware already supports Dark Wake mode), except for Apple's refusal to do so.

Speaking of SSDs, Mac OS X supported TRIM command since version 10.6.6 or so, but it artificially limits the feature to those that identify themselves to the system as "APPLE SSD". Of course, there are utilities that patch the system driver so that 3rd party SSDs work with TRIM, but still.

Another example: in iOS 3.0 (then called iPhone OS) Apple caved in to demand and added support for MMS, however it was limited to iPhone 3G and 3GS, leaving out the original iPhone. So the jailbreak community quickly discovered that one of the system frameworks had a check for model version, basically saying: "if you're not iPhone 3G or newer, then no MMS for you!" There was also a patch that enabled MMS on jailbroken 2G iPhones, proving that all required support was already in place.

It's not a ploy that Apple is using BT LE, not the more ubiquitous WiFi for hand off...

Apple wants all it's current devices to be able to talk w/ each other once iOS 8 and Yosemite are public.

Enter "iWatch" which likely will have BT LE but not WiFi.

Letsee, my iMac 27, MacBook Pro , MacBook Air, Apple TV, & retina iPad are not supported coolest features of ios 8 & Yosemite. But hey my iPhone 5s is (maybe). Am I going to have a garage sale ? Nope, Am I going to buy all new computers? Nope. Am I going to buy a new iPhone this release? Nope. For the first time In my life I may be looking at competing products. Yup.

From the beta release notes for both b1 & b2-

"Phone call relay uses Bluetooth when it should be using Wi-Fi. Since not all devices have the necessary Bluetooth support, this may fail on some hardware."

Phone call relay, by the 8.0 release, will be a wifi enabled technology and your bluetooth chipset is not relevant. At least that's what Apple CURRENTLY says.

This requirement makes absolutely no sense. So what is the point to "handoff" if I have to carry the devices into the same room? Considering how limited BT range is, I don't see how using it instead of an available wi-fi system makes any sense at all.

I think handoff likely can fallback to BT if wifi or some other network connection is not available. Communication over BT is terrible as the first and only option.

Can't understand the justification for not falling back on wifi

Because the Mac isn't going to see a handoff beacon from an iPhone 4S/5/5S that is broadcasting over BTLE.

There is no fallback. It doesn't have the hardware to see the iDevice.

This 17" Mac is my third or fourth, and alas, last. Whilst one can't deny the wonder of the retina displays, they're still too small to be able to code full screen. Maybe it's an age thing, but I'd sooner sit a way away from the screen.

In any case I use these Thunderbolt displays; in the office or at home. The MBP sits on a stand and is the secondary display for emails, diary & tunes.

For me, I'd rather we had square screens with 2000 pixels high and wide. That way you can see text. I really couldn't care about wide screens as I have a telly for that; my computers are for work, and work is coding. I guess I ought to buy another Thunderbolt display and stick two side-by-side vertically.

It's such a pity that the MBPs are just too small for me. But as this 17" works well, there's little/no point in upgrading any time soon.

Well sorry the 15" doesn't fit your needs as it really is an exceptional laptop. Quite a gaming machine too. I'm 22 and have no problem coding and writing on mine (although to be fair I don't do a huge amount of coding, but I do write a lot). My choice would be to buy an external display for work/home and use that. Really wish Apple would hurray up with a retina Thunderbolt display 5120x3200 would be awesome, IPS, 60Hz!

BT 4.0 LE Dongle and done

Title says it all.. not sure why people are such whiny babies.. It's like $10-20 for one.. maybe more for a micro compact one that doesn't stick out..

Nothing stopping anyone from getting the dongle for an older mac/macbook... big babies..

Agh, I don't care about being energy-efficient. Just let me use Bluetooth 3 like a normal person. No devices use Bluetooth 4 except for Apple's most recent Macs and iPhones. It's even more annoying that the iOS developer API does not let you use Bluetooth 3.

How frustrating!

Without the continuity and airdrop features, I really don't feel like they did anything for OS X or iOS this year aside from change some fonts and icons.

Yeah, this version of OS X seems like the iOS 7 of OS X updates. Hardly any new features, just new GUI.

I would love to see Apple release an Apple branded Bluetooth 4.0 USB dongle with support for it baked into OS X. You plug that in, the system automatically bypasses the internal Bluetooth and defaults to the dongle. Price it in the $29.99-$39.99 range. They'd make a lot of people happy and the price is still less than what OS X updates used to cost. It really is a bummer that machines bought in 2012 like the 2011 iMacs they were selling most of the year won't be able to use this feature, especially seeing as they were shipping BT 4.0 in the Airs in 2011.

ah,, u must use Bluetooth 4.0/LE to use it ?

I knew their would be a catch :p

I thought it would just be a switch in System Preferences or something, and assuming your on the same wi-fi network.

I guess this could be also done, wonder why Apple didn't do this instead.

Not doubting Bluetooth or anything, because i never use it, but i would have thought Apple would have done this over Wi-fi, since if your on a laptop you'd be on Wi-fi most probably.

Where as if your on an iMac, you'd be on Bluetooth anyway :p

Double-edged sword.... My only guess is Bluetooth would work better. So that's also then saying Apple demises Wi-fi.

Less is more? I know there's a few diehards still in love with those 17" mammoth displays but really? What am I missing? An optical drive? Haven't needed to use a disc yet. Firewire? Never used it in my life. Ethernet is the only thing I wouldn't mind having but I'm perfectly fine living without it. Thinner, lighter, faster, longer battery life.

No upgradeable RAM is the big one. Also, the lack of an ethernet port matters a lot to some people. And the 17" display option is way better when you're sitting at a desk. Personally, I'd still use 13", but some people need 17", whether or not you approve of it.

Anyway, the Retina MacBook Pro is so sleek and has such a nice display that I can overlook its flaws :)

Getting it to work seamlessly doesn't seem to be a cakewalk though. That's why I'd love to see an Apple branded one with baked in support that doesn't require kext editing to get working seamlessly. I haven't read up on it as much as I'd like, but from what I've gathered thus far, there are issues that need to be death with for 3rd party dongles to work well with the system, hence why Apple ought to just nip this in the bud with as much of an emphasis as they're putting on BT 4.0 lately.
