Really, honestly...tell me what percentage of people out their know that faking a MAC address is even possibile...or how many even know what a MAC address is??

Unless you live next door to a wily teenager or a hacker, I highly doubt you're going to have a number of people bypassing MAC address filtering.

Better to be safe than sorry is what I say.

Besides, keeping a MAC whitelist up to date can be a huge pain. It's just easier to set a good WPA password and be done with it.

I agree. I was in no way saying that not password protecting your router was a good idea. Maybe in a dorm setting or something, it's common to leave it unlocked, but in a neighborhood (where I'm paying for my service, and I want every ounce of speed out of it)...no way.

I used to have the router password protected AND a MAC filter...but the MAC filter got annoying, so I took it off.

There used to be my two networks, and a few linksyses and netgears. I've noticed that there's been less and less of those, but yesterday was the first time that I didn't see any open networks.

Then again, when I go to my grandparents' house, all the ones around there are unsecured... (and one of them has FiOS 50Mbps down  )

Most have really low bandwidth caps. (UCONN has 10GB/week!)

Mike lives with stupid people.

I sure do... Connecticut! :p

Pretty quiet in my street. The first one is mine, hoping the obnoxious family over the road gets the hint ;)

There are 2 unprotected networks in my range, my neighbour's and mine. Only unprotected atm cause my sister's laptop doesn't play nice with WPA2.

I honestly wonder about the usefulness of passwords though, anyone who really wants on is going to get on.

No one here.
