I haven't signed on for a few years, so maybe that's why, but I was looking at some articles and where you can post comments, but all I see now is "You have insufficient privileges to reply here."

Is it a paywall thing or inactivity thing or something else?

No, not a paywall thing.

Some sections of the forum require a poster (a member of the forum) to have a specific number of posts made before they can post in certain areas of the forum (market place, and the Political News sections are two that come to mind).

In the case of the Political News section, one must have a minimum of 100 posts (at present, you have 96, another four posts would see you able to post there), before one can post there.

This is the same number of posts that used to be required before one could make a post in the old (lamented by some, but not by others) PRSI section of the forum, in a way, the (perhaps distaff) ancestor of the current Political News Section.

“Why” is explained in the FAQ - its in the Political News forum.

Unless you mean “why” as in the motivation for the restriction, which I’ll leave to the staff. AFAIK it’s “just a rule” and I’ve not given it much more thought.
I meant the latter (I read the FAQ). Just wondering after discovering this restriction.

We're mainly an Apple and Tech site. These forum restrictions are set so users aren't just keeping themselves to the political section. People who establish themselves in discussions that are the main target of the forums, then get the access to posting there.

It also prevents new accounts from stirring up controversy, keeping that side moderated is already tough enough. You'll see we offer to block the political section altogether in your account settings if you rather not see any of that.

Ok, I understand this decision better. Neither do I want this to be a political discussion focused forum. 100 post limit felt a little high.
