Okay, so someone please help...

I got a firewire cable and did the whole thing with my friend's Powerbook G4. The only thing is that I don't see my PB as a drive on his PB. It just opens the cd's on my broken Powerbook and sees them. HOW is it not seeing my broken PB as a drive????

EDIT: Ahem... now where were we talking about the sticky with all the key commands..... hmm... Anyone wanna start a post (going to Apple and typing all them up) about all the keys and what they do on startup and for while in the OS like CONTROL + OPTION + ESCAPE brings up the force quit menu. Yeah... if no one does, I'll start on it tonight after work.

signed, sealed and delivered for all those tha wish to gaze at it! :D

Thank you for the command list. It shall be useful to all in the future. So what could be my problem? I did the Apple Hardware test from the CD and everything passed, including the logic board. Also, WHY can't I see my broken PB on my friend's in Firewire target mode...? Anyone?

Try disk utiliy and see if you can mount your drive that way. (mount button is next tothe new image button) Also check the SMART status of your drive.

If you ran the hardware test did it actually test your machine or your friends power book?

See if you can get a copy of DiskWarrior. This has helped me restore many drives that were not visible in target disk mode (it is a bootable disc as well, but it doesn't sound like you can get this far). Other programs that might work include TechTool Pro and Drive Genius.

You can't see the PB because the Hard Drive's directories are dammaged enough that it's not "mountable" ie: it can't display what it can't make sense of.

Good news: If you've not heard any funky clicking, grinding or other unusual (rythmic) noises from your drive than it's probably fixable.

Bad news: If you have been hearing any odd, rythmic noises from the drive it may be irretrevable.

Good news: Because your system is panicking mid-boot during the Panther startup screen (as opposed to the grey-Apple screen) you're most likely (90% sure) dealing with a FUBAR Hard Drive.

Bad News: Even if you can recover the Volume (Structure of the information) on the drive, not all your data may be intact and it may never be stable without reinstalling.

You'll need a copy of Norton Utilities 8, Norton Systemworks 3 or Techtool Pro 4.03. I've used all 3 of the leading utility suites and I far and away recommend Norton. This comes from years of experience getting paid to fix people's machines. Trust me: If anything can save that Drive, it's Norton.

Tell me more about your Powerbook.

What model is it?

Does it have a slot loading or a tray loading CD drive?

what OS was installed on it to begin with?

How big a HD is in it?

Have you been noticing odd behaviour recently like gradually slower file access, startup time and/or missing or incorrect icons?

Please calm down and be more specific. I've been doing this long enough to walk you through it, I've fixed machines that've done this but you've got to stay calm.

First, while booted in Target Disk Mode (Bravo for getting there with a minimum of coaching) go to HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility on the host machine.

Use Disk Utility's First Aid to verify and repair permissions on the PB.

If this fails to fix the issue get Norton and try again.

If you have applecare and recieved the applecare cd, try inserting it and holding down "C". Maybe you have already tried this but it has work for me before.

Doing this will boot your machine from the CD, subsequently Techtool Pro will start up which MAY be avle to fix your problem. I hope this helps.

Hi all

I have a similar problem with a multi language restart screen but mine happens usually when i start internet browser though not always. what can i do to identify and fix th problem?

I recently experienced a problem similar to this on an iMac DV. it would begin to boot and then spit out "panic: we are hanging here". I eventually remedied it by starting the iMac up in firewire target mode (hold t as the computer starts up), mounting it to my powerbook, and re-blessing the OS 9 system folder. OS X had to be reinstalled to be usable again.

If you do not have a copy of OS 9 to boot from on the drive, I would suggest mounting your powerbook's hard drive onto another mac using firewire target mode, backing up all of your schoolwork, and then reformatting the disk and reinstalling OS X. it will be a pain, but it seems like a completely clean install is the best way to remedy a kernel panic being thrown that early in the boot process.

I don't think his Powerbook would be able to boot into OS 9, depending ofcourse on how old it is.

It has to be a Kernal Panic. I've had that before where it asks you to restart by holding the button. I would just find a way to reinstall the version of Mac you were using!:eek::eek:

Good Luck!

New Thread

It's not really appropriate to drag up a thread from three years ago. You'd probably get more help by starting a new one.

What you are experiencing is a "Kernal Panic". It is the worst kind of error on a Mac, and usually indicates a hardware malfunction - though not always. We'll need some more information about you system. What browser are you launching, what computer do you have, what version of OS X are you running?

Me, I would recommend backing up all your data, and doing an "erase and install" of OS X to restore it to factory settings. Then, move your data back on. If the problem persists, take it in for repair. See the "Erase and Install" option on this website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270

Another Option To Help This Problem

Hellow,

I've got the same problem, i also get the Kernel Panic Window after i started up and log on my iMac. Now, this Kernel Panic Window can also come if you Power Off your iMac wrong, or sometimes the iMac make a mistake when i Powers Off. This is what i did to help this problem:

1. Start up your Mac. (There may not a disk or USB device in it !!)

2. When you are on the Log In screen, click the arrow to the left.

3. Then click Restart.

4. Now let restart your Mac, this can take several minutes! But do not go away, stay by your iMac !

5. Now on the Log In screen, just log in.

6. Then when your Bureau appear wait 30 sec or longer...

7. Now it's fixed !! You can get a report problem to mac window, click report to mac !!

This is how i help me !! And i hope it helps you !! Let me know, and enjoy again from your Mac !! Because Mac is the Best !! :apple:

similar problem

Hey guys,

Not sure whether you guys are still paying attention to this thread or not... but i have a similar problem that is not solvable by any of the above posts.

I have a 2 month old (brand new) 24" Intel iMac, which worked perfectly up until 2 days ago...
Basically i hear the chime, see the white screen and nothing else. It will accept the install dvds into the dvd drive, spin them and by the sounds of it, read them... but will not boot to installation or disk utility.
After about half an hour of it sitting on just a white screen, it then fronts with the folder+question mark icon.

I have tried (unsuccessfully):
.resetting PV and PR RAM - this just restarted with no difference
.booting holding "D" - this did nothing
.booting holding "command+S" (single user mode) - this did nothing
.booting holding "shift" (safe mode) - this did nothing
.booting holding "t" (target mode) - *** this showed up with the firewire icon after waiting for half an hour, but did not register as an external on my macbook***

There's also other boot options i have tried, none of which have worked...
I'm not so concerned about the iMac as i am the contents of the hard-drive which are very important to me. As far as i can see, Norton Utilities 2008 hasn't come for mac yet either...

I'm inclined to think it's the ram that's fried, even though it's 2 months old and has not been touched since i bought it. I think this because I've had a similar problem with a PC in the past where it wouldn't go past BIOS, the ram wasn't fully clicked in.
I'm also inclined to think this because i can perform base motherboard operations but am not able to utilize any part of the computers peripherals... i.e. hard drive or dvd drive.

Anybody got a verdict?

Sven93´s tip didit!

Thank you Sven93! Your suggested solution solved the problem for me.
