my new mac encounters this problem frequently. more frequently with vmware fusion. when my windows vista is up; my whole screen went dim and a box comes up with this message:

you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button.

Its called a Kernal Panic...have you installed any new hardware? If not, try repairing disk permissions, and resetting the PRAM :)

Does it happen when the external HD is not connected?

I don't know. when the windows is up and running in the beginning and then the problem happens.

You brought up a question of mine too - how to make the external HD connect in both leopard and windows through vmware fusion?
