when did it change from having 60 days from date of purchase, to now having 30 days to purchase AppleCare for a new 15PM?

@Misheemee you have to visit an Apple Store to increase the 30 days to 60. At least in Australia.
If you received 7-Day Complimentary coverage with your new iPhone, you will be able to purchase AppleCare+ after this coverage has expired.
  1. Buy AppleCare+ within 30 days of your iPhone purchase:
    • On your iPhone (go to Settings > General > About, and choose Add AppleCare+ Coverage)
    • Online (requires you to verify your serial number and run a remote diagnostic)
    • By calling 1300-321-456 (requires you to run a remote diagnostic and provide proof of purchase)
  2. Or buy AppleCare+ within 60 days of your iPhone purchase:
    • At an Apple Store (inspection of iPhone and proof of purchase are required)

Wow, this is new!! This is the first Apple device that’s been like this!! I have a “few” devices, and it’s always been been 60 days

I was going to buy it anyways, but just found this strange

Thank you @arw 🙏

My iPhone 15 Pro Max has 51 days left. I'm in the UK and I ordered it through the app for collection at my local store on the 22nd. My watch Series 9 i ordered through the app for delivery and it has 52 days left.

My watch was delivered on the same day I picked up my iPhone. Watch was delivered ~2PM on the 22nd and I picked up my phone about ~3PM on the 22nd.

Not sure why the watch has an extra day but yeah... I got a good 50 days left before I need to buy AppleCare for either of them.

Does it actually matter when one buys it, if you want to buy it anyway?

Or do you baby your devices for those 60 days and then go wild once your AC+ kicks in? 😉

It does and doesn't. Depends how you look at it.

You can get 2 months "extra" out of your AC+ if you buy at the last day (~22nd Nov '23 if you bought at launch day). It will then end around the same date in '25. You will need to not be clumsy and try not damage your phone in those first 60 days.

or

You can just have it start the same day you buy/receive it. You don't need to "baby" it for 2 months but come September '25 you will need to start taking extra care of it sooner.

It kinda a half glass full/empty situation. It doesn't really matter what you do.

Personally I'm holding off as long as possible before buying AC+ because I feel like I take good care of my phone. I wouldn't say I baby it. Yeah I have screen protector + case on it but I'm quite happy to throw it about, put it in my bag with keys/coins, or whip it in and out of my pocket. I know accidents happen but I feel good with my chances that I won't break it in the next 51 days. In the almost 3 years I had my 12 Pro Max I dropped it only a few times.

In the states, 54 days left on my phone that has been activated for six days. Not being real good at math I think that works out to 60 days.

No, it doesn’t - it was moreso letting the Macrumours community know

I currently have a m1 MBP with AppleCare, M1 Air with AppleCare, a 13PM with AppleCare, an AW8 with AppleCare and AirPods Pro 2 with AppleCare - I’ve always had 60 days available to buy AppleCare (and I’d pay for the 2 years in full). I normally take advantage of the 60 days because of the outlay to buy the phone, case, accessories at the purchase time.

This has now changed with the release of the 15PM

This!!

In China, it's now 7 days (or 8 days) after purchase, due to Huaqiangbei's clever merchants exploiting the "dead" iPhones for the exchange of Apple exchanged units (and selling in the secondary market).
