Even for people with no limb differences, this opens up a whole world of useful possibilities for alternative inputs and actions. Like if I'm carrying something and don't have a second hand free, being able to answer calls or dismiss alerts with a clench or a pinch is just amazing.

This is great news. I have a friend who is missing everything past his elbow on one side. He's quite capable, able to go rock climbing, mountain biking, etc. But something like an Apple Watch can be difficult to control. I'm sure he will be excited about this! I love Apple's stance on accessibility and using technology to improve people's lives. It puts most other companies to shame.

Here is Tim Cook's response to a shareholder saying they should focus only on the ROI and not other things like accessibility or the environment:

I gained a lot of respect for Mr. Tim Apple that day.
Please Tim’s whole life is based on ROI. He should stay out of the spotlight and run Apple quietly.

I sure hope it can be turned off. I use my watch while rowing, where my wrist and hands constantly move, so it probably wouldn't work for me.

Apple today previewed a long list of new accessibility features coming soon, including AssistiveTouch for the Apple Watch, which will allow users to control an Apple Watch without ever having to touch the display or controls.

Aided by on-device machine learning, the Apple Watch's gyroscope, accelerometer, and heart rate sensor will be able to detect subtle differences in muscle movement and tendon activity, and these movements will allow users to navigate a cursor on the Apple Watch's display through a series of hand gestures, like a pinch or a clench.

AssistiveTouch on the Apple Watch will enable customers who have limb differences to more easily answer incoming calls, control an on-screen motion pointer, access Notification Center and Control Center, and more.

Apple says AssistiveTouch for the Apple Watch will be available with a software update. The feature will likely be part of watchOS 8, which is expected to be unveiled alongside iOS 15, macOS 12, and tvOS 15 at WWDC 2021 next month.

I want this to activate SIRI, then i can do more and do them faster. 😎

I guess the Deaf people as well as the hearing people who use the gestures a lot when talking (i.e. Italians) will undoubtfully have hard time preventing the Apple Watch from going into the data overload and meltdown while they sign...

Deaf people discovered the issue with hand gesture control in new BMW cars. The control keeps mistaking the Deaf person's signing as the "unrecognised" hand gesture and beeps the error message.

Apple Great ... I like this feature, it's very useful for me when I'm driving, of course in a place where not many people pass by ^^

Apple watch 4 user here. From my experience, gyro and detection in general is ridiculously inconsistent (getting congratulations for standing up while still sitting all the time, twisting my wrist to see what time it is, only to stare into a black screen, etc...

Maybe detection is better in newer models, if not, they should focus on improving that first. Or else new functonalities are just gimmics.

I just hope these can be turned off. Siri is already butting in to conversations where nothing even remotely resembling "Hey siri" has been said. The clock face changes by itself for whatever reason even when I haven't even touched the watch. So now it'll be doing even more without my approval? Thanks, but no thanks.

It's an accessibility feature, so it'll almost certainly be opt-in.

First of all "YESSSSSSSS" this is awesome. But does anyone else remember the Myo Arm Band?

That looks neat. Shame it never gone any where. Looks they stop making it. And direct users to ebay. Where sellers are selling it for $1,000 dollars. Not that I want it.

Can the gestures be assigned to things? E.G. can I trigger “Hey Siri…” with one of them?

This was the first thing I went looking for when watchOS 8 dropped. Was a bit annoyed when I found out it was only for the new series 7. Very happy to read this!
