Which Social Media do you choose?
I have been with Facebook for the longest time, over 20 years, originally got on it to stay in touch with family, but I rarely use it today.

Several years ago I was pointed at Mastodon by one of MacRumors intrepid members, thanks! I love its decentralized structure (Federated) without a behemouth corporate overlord, or even a corporate master of any kind, although there are ‘instances’ under the control of corporations, and each instance likely has moderators, with instance rules of conduct, but as far as I have seen:
  • Mastodon runs ‘Liberal’.
  • As an individual, you can start your own Mastodon Instance without much fuss or expense. (As far as I know. Please correct me if in error).
  • You can change instances and bring a record of your followers, and those you follow, with you. No, they don’t change instances themselves, but in this structure, the record of follower and following (individuals) can be taken with you if you decide to change instances so you don’t have to be rediscovered, or start from scratch.
  • I can’t speak for the entire Mastodon World, but in my experience, personal insults, and politically based criticism of the harshish sort it can be applied without censorship or retribution from moderators (my guess this could depend on the instance you choose) However note, ‘personal’ is not the norm, but political is daily, that is criticism applied to politics, no holds barred.
  • Bad language is acceptable, you can curse up a storm, but the category of ‘hate speech’ and ‘racism’, I can’t honestly say it’s not allowed, but I’ve not seen it. My guess is if you are a flagrant offender, if not moderated, you’ll be ‘blocked’ into oblivion.
  • Politics and the state of the world is a primary attraction, but there are all sorts of topics to be found such as art, popular media, nature, travel, just about everything.
  • Blocking- When you prevent someone from seeing your post, are you seeing theirs. I’ve noticed in the Mastodon community. It does not take much to get blocked. I’ve been blocked by surprise, and I blocked others fairly quickly. In my experience, what I’ve observed is that you won’t see pages upon pages of **** storms between two individuals. Usually blocks happen pretty quickly. And because of that, I take extra steps to be clear and polite, and not offensive when speaking directly to another member, until I’ve got their number then maybe things change. And discussing politics… directed at politicians? Let it rip!😁

why is WhatsApp considered a social media app here ? It is a messenger. By this logic iMessage, signal or telegram would need to be on this list too.

I only listed it because it appeared in a big list of social media (near the top) and I’m no expert on all the social media out there. I know what I’m personally familiar with, but the fact is there’s a lot more than what I listed. So as it’s not easy to edit the poll, I’d suggest just ignore it as a choice.

It would be "none of the above" for me. I used Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn (not on your list) for awhile but ultimately gave up on all of them. Have stopped even clicking on YouTube links for the most part. Never used any of the others on your list and not likely to. I understand the appeal and don't regret participating for awhile, but have found better ways to use my time now.

I blew it, should have included ‘other’. I don’t think it’s possible but I’ll ask the powers…

Well…

I deleted my Facebook account in February 2017. Have not been back since. I do have a X/Twitter account, but that is used SOLELY to contact my carrier's customer service. It's logged out otherwise.

I do use YouTube. And I am logged in to YT because it's Google and I have a Google account and I want YT to remember my preferences. I'm there solely to watch videos. I have never, ever, commented. That's not what I use YT for.

Then there is MacRumors and Reddit.

I'm guessing the forums here at MacRumors are the social media I use the most...if you consider a forum a social media?

I used to be on Facebook and Instagram. But - ironically - after the former bought the latter, I think Instagram started going downhill.

Quit both a few years ago (still have accounts but don't use them).

I also had a largely unused Twitter-account, but logged out permanently there once that started going downhill.

Tried Mastadon for a while, but never really got into it.

When Bluesky opened for all, I got an account there, and that's the only of the list I actually use fairly regularly. Since almost no-one I know IRL (or online) are on that platform regularly, it's not really a social media, more of a mass medium. I read more than I post.

And speaking of mass medium, I also use Youtube quite a lot (mostly on my TV via an Apple TV), but that's more pure one way entertainment, and I rarely post anything there.

Than there's LinkedIn, that I keep for professional reasons, and that I do frequent, although very infrequently.

I use Instagram and Youtube... I have a reddit and facebook account (At least I think I do), facebook, I only use for toys and comics since that place seems to get the announcements first... don't know why. Reddit, I haven't used in a very long while.

Youtube is pretty much my go to though... more about consuming content than being a social platform though.
