Your first computer

My first desktop was mine only in the sense that it was in my home and my father let me toy around with it under careful supervision. It was an Apple IIGS with an 160SC attached that he brought home in October or November of 1987. Seems charmingly quaint now, but to a child it was it was like something from the future. The first desktop that I ever used as more than a toy was an LC III that was remaindered from my primary school. The clearest memories that I have from it were the external CD300 that came with it, that required caddies, and a game that was essentially Mahjong solitaire, though I can't remember the name. My first portable, and also the first computer that was really mine, was a PowerBook 2300c that I took practically everywhere with me.

I still have all of them in storage and, so far as I know, they are still functional.

I was digging through the old house earlier today, and came across this (I pixelated my last name out so no one can file illegal tax returns using my identity...not paranoid at all)...

My old Atari 800XL, complete with Donkey Kong cartridge. It was a teetotal blast from the past.

I should also have an old disk drive lying around somewhere. Should've been right next to it, actually. But for some tragic reason, it's been moved elsewhere. I'm sure I've still got it, though. If I find it, I'll post a picture of the two together. Maybe even try hooking it up if I can find an old TV.

My first actual computer was a Timex Sinclair 1000, the U.S. version of the ZX81. This was 1982. I remember buying the computer at a strange (now-defunct) catalog retailer called Service Merchandise for half the original price, which was about all of my savings as a 12-13 year old kid.

I remember spending hours typing in BASIC programs to run using that horrible membrane keyboard, and we didn't have any way to save the programs so when you wanted to use it the next day you would type everything in again. Ugh. But it was my first experience with programming and very fascinating. Coming from playing games on the Atari 2600 and Colecovision, it was neat to see how programs and games were made and learning that you could create your own.

Technically, my first computer was an Apple IIe but we didn't have it for very long. My parents didn't like it and quickly replaced it with a PC that had an 8088 8MHz processor. That PC is the one I usually associate with being my first computer since I hardly remember using the IIe. They never purchased another Apple computer.

My first Apple computer that I actually purchased, a Macbook, didn't come until 25 years after we got rid of the IIe. I never really considered Apple computers until I worked with someone who was a big fan of Macs and got to use his Powerbook for a little bit.

My first computery thing was a playstation.

My first computer was a gateway thing. I remember it had a 550mhz pentium 3, 128mb ram and a 6GB hard drive.

My next computer was a G4 Powerbook, and from there I never looked back (except of course when I went and started collected older macs, but thats a different story!)

First was some unidentified 486 IBM machine, then my Dad got his hands on a Mac IIci...I don't remember much of the IBM, so I consider the IIci to be my first.

I had an Atari XE too for my first computer... my parents couldn't afford an Amiga

the first computer i'd used was a Texas Instruments TI-994, I think, it was my sisters xmas present, which I ended up using more than her from day one

The first mac I owned was a Graphite iMac 600 MHz, but i'd been using macs at work a good few years before purchasing my own..

First mac I used was a Quadra 800

(2006) Apple Macbook Black @2Ghz - great little laptop but seriously under-powered - sold on ebay 5 months after purchase at a higher than purchasing price. Ebay is still a mystery to me...

First "New" computer (Age: 8, Year: 2005)

Dell Dimension 5100

My first "New" computer. Got it as a present for performing highest in my class in school with near perfect test scores. It was a really awesome computer. Of course being 9, I couldn't use internet on it, so if I wanted the web I had to go use the family computer. It was really good for what it had though! Absolutely loved this computer and was probably my favorite (tied for another computer you'll see on here).

First Laptop (Age: 11-2, 2008-9; Bought before Windows 7 was out, but can't remember exact age/year)

Dell Inspiron 1526

We got our first laptop originally for my mom but I took it over and it ended up becoming my computer (she would probably use it about 2 weeks in a whole year). It took a lot of hits, including a lot of scratches on the inside body and outside, and some loose parts (like the expansion card slot and left click button on the trackpad). My mom is currently using it as a desktop replacement as it died a while ago. It runs well, but will probably need replacing by college, which then she'll be using this MacBook Pro probably! Still, that laptop was good for it's cheapo price, but it always left me wanting more.

First New Apple Computer (Age: 14, Date: December 2011)

13-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2011)

This is my current computer and I absolutely love it. Best computer tied with my old Dell tower. Biggest upgrade ever in my computers and I just absolutely love it. Also being my first Apple computer to have an intel processor or even be able to run Mac OS X. I will cherish and love this Mac forever!

First Tablet Computer (Age: 15, Date: August 2012)

Google Nexus 7 by Asus

Just ordered my very first tablet computer yesterday! Thank you Google for doing 2 day auto shipping so the latest my tablet will get here will be on Thursday! When I get it and play with it I'll be doing my own review of it!

Then he bought a SE/30, and when I went to college I took that with me. I added a Sony 14 inch CRT to it. Dual screen WOOHOO with 832x624px x256 colours. I made my drawings in architecture school illegaly in MacDraw. Not that MacDraw was illegal, but you were not supposed to use a computer until the master program in the 3rd year. We only got a DOS 1.4 MB floppy with NUPOP mail client to send and receive emails from the first year on from the faculty PC room or the library.

Then my first personal purchase: the LC475 who got me through my master.

Then with the first salary a G4 gigabit (the rest of the hardware in the world took almost another 10 years to support gigabit) 400mhz tower.

Then the illegal non-existing 1.5Ghz G4 mini
Then the mini 2.26 Ghz
Now the i5 Radeon Mini.

After the crappy MacPlus display, I lost it with the all-in-one strategy of Apple and fell mainly in love with their tiny boxes. In that respect, opening the LC475 still is amazing. Apple NEVER made a tiny clean easy to open and upgrade machine as that one.

Atari 65 XE with XC12 (replaced with LDW2000 a few weeks later). Afer that it was 1040STE and in 1994 my firtst Apple LC 475 Performa. That's how it all started for me. Since then- I' ve always had a couple of Macs + other wonderful Apple products around in my house. Never really missed Windows

Got an Apple IIc back in 1984. Man, I could have played SkyFox on that forever. Lode Runner and Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego were my mom's favorites. She beat both, all 150 levels of the former and 40 cases of the latter.

In 1994, we got a Performa 575. It came with something called a 'modem'. I used it to dial into the BBS run by the middle school of the next town over. Good times.

I'll tell you.

It was a stick. That stick could be anything I wanted it to be. A gun. A sword. A magic staff. A grappling hook. One of those things the guys in Tron stuck out in front of them to turn into a light cycles. That stick was an amazing thing.

Kids these days don't have it as good as we did. Sure, you've all got the flash and bang and whizz now and high resamolution retina displays now, but it lacks the soul, the quality of the things we had back then. Your fancy tablet could never be a pirate sabre no matter how hard you tried.

Also I had one of these...

This was what we 80's-90's kids had to use for our portable electronic entertainment, and it was awesome. Green monochrome screen, 4 AA batteries, and all. Had a whole bunch of cartridges for it, too.

Lost my beautiful Gameboy Color and sold my Advance, but I still have my cardridges littered here and there

and I can still use my imagination outside, but sometimes it's nice to curl up inside and watch movies on your 7" tablet.

The MacBook Pro was paid about half by me and was a combined Birthday/Christmas present and the tablet was 100% me too, so at least I'm not spoiled.
