Your gamble - when the iMac fiasco will end?

Ordered 21.5, I7, Fusion, 16GB on 15 January. Will be delivered 29 January. Hardly a fiasco.

Ordered my 27, I7, Fusion, 8 Gb (already upgraded to 32 aftermarket) on day 1 of Apple taking orders ... had it 5 days before Xmas and I do live in Italy : it's a fiasco if you don't care enough to buy when it's available to order ...

As the months move on and on, it seems that the iMac fiasco isn't getting near its end.
What is your gamble to this idiotic situation? On what month we will see it end, and the imac will available to buy immediately.
My take: the end of march.

The only fiasco I can see from where I'm sitting is a troll post to open a thread discussing specious assertions.

I received my 27" BTO iMac on December 13, 2012. Apple projected my delivery Dec 24 to Dec 31.

My iMac is as perfect as anyone could hope.

Now, what is all this nonsense about a fiasco?

No fiasco for me....

I walked into the apple store on Jan 16 and bought a top of the line 27" iMAC and was in and out in 15 minutes. It's a gorgeous machine. The only thing I would have upgraded BTO would have been a 3TB fusion drive instead of a 1TB fusion drive. But I can add an external drive when I need to.

It's a beautiful and powerful machine. I love it. I hope y'all are just as happy and successful with your iMAC.

Similarly, while it was frustrating waiting 3-4 weeks on a BTO, I ended up walking into an Apple store Tuesday and finding almost the same config (fusion drive only difference) and left with it that day. While I had been calling around a bit for a few days, it wasn't exactly a "crisis" or "fiasco".

Ordered 20th dec. so it's taken 5 weeks so far and still processing. Even if it preps for shipment today that will take it to 6 weeks. Given Chinese New Year etc im sure that will take it to 7 at the earliest. My beef is the fact that apple are clearly not operating on a first come first served basis. Many Examples of this are given in threads on this site!

IThis new iMac is obviously difficult to produce in large numbers,

That's what they get for trying to make it thinner. The welding process used is very slow, compared to other methods. But the heat generated by conventional methods would not allow it to be so thin.

it's probably just the Applecare box!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but theres no more AppleCare box???

I ordered AC with the computer and it said nothing more than, you've been registered with AppleCare. Was I supposed to get a box like we used to? They used to send a parred down version TechTools with it.

Anybody else order AppleCare and get a box???

Apple Care Auto-Enroll which is what you get when you order and also if you opt for Auto-Enrol at the store does not come with a box.

All you get is the warranty extension, verifiable online.

I received a (FedEx delivered) padded envelope containing the packing slip and one AppleCare pamphlet/booklet.

It's called smart marketing! Apple does this with all there products. When people can't get something, they want it even more! Think of the 2-3 week wait,as a computer vacation...steve would love that one :)

Like as in a girl playing hard to get? ;)

imac sales down from the previous year due to manufacturing constraints, share price drops 10% due to flat growth ... you really think they're shorting the imac on purpose?

Fiasco - Yes!

ordered 20th Dec - just been told at least another 4 weeks from now. The reseller said that their Apple rep stated that apple are in a world of strife regarding the imac!

i understand people not thinking this is a fiasco...mostly those that either have their computer, ordered a 21", ordered in january, or have a lower spec'd machine. a quick visit to the december 27" order threads will prove that apple is not supplying these on a FCFS basis, orders (especially those with my config) are taking longer than a 4 week waiting period, etc. I think regardless of them saying that there were production issues and supply being constrained, if it's fcfs it would be a lot more tolerable.

Just tried to speak to customer relations. I was told that the reason I hadn't received my imac was that the 27 inch machines had not been released yet!

What are these people smoking .... Please!

Mate, love the snide remarks on every single thread about the 2012. For somebody who doesn't want one or seemingly disappointed with them, you sure spend a lot of time writing about them...

It's not a fiasco, but it's not a great situation either. And it's certainly not a gamble. Frustrating for sure, I waited almost a month for mine and I think that's about normal. I'd have liked it within a week, but the wait wasn't that bad considering it included the Christmas/New Year's break.

It does seem demand is growing as it becomes more apparent that the anti glare screen and fusion drive really work and the heat and dust issues are gone. In fact, so far, there doesn't seem to be any glaring issues with the machine.

Sure there have been QC issues and some IR, but that's not the sole domain of these new machines. They are still new though, so there's time to develop something!

I'm actually far more impressed with this machine than when I got my 2008 fully specced 24. In fact, only my ipad 1 has wowed me more than this machine.

Agree totally, have 27" 3TB fusion 680MX and new iPad mini--- couldn't be happier! ( ordered 27" 30 Nov, got it 19th Dec-in Thailand-what's wrong with that?)

Apple or a 3rd party seller?

I can understand if it's third party because for them, with no stock, it may feel like they haven't been released yet!!!

But really, whoever you spoke to is about as clueless as they come.

EDIT: Okay, just read it's a third party. It's quite possible that Apple never gave them a specific date, but the company wanted your custom and told you a date. If Apple promised them supply by a certain date then that's a broken contract.

Not having a go, but why order through a third party in the knowledge that supply was going to be constrained?
You could just cancel the order and reorder through Apple? Good luck and hopefully some good news coming your way soon!

No no .... This was apple!!! I had to hang up in the end as I knew more than the apple employee!

I ordered through a reseller as I like to do my bit for local business and call me old fashioned but I like dealing with people face to face.

Waiting an extra couple of weeks was never going to be a problem but this takes the biscuit!

Shorting the resellers is so out of order as it effects their business and their customers. Apple should show some ethical responsibility!

My Fiasco is incoming to sit on my desk in Florence ,i hope today,
and while we are talking about sweetness i will welcome it
with a glass of delicious Chianti's vine ^^
cheers

Enjoy it! It's been a long time coming buddy, been on all the date guessing threads together since spring last year!!

Really?!? Do you have any evidence for this claim?

First, nothing I've read about friction stir welding suggests that it is slow.

Second, I've seen no credible claim that welding of the iMac chassis has been a significant production problem. The problems supposedly are connected to the screen assemblies, not the chassis. But I don't believe Apple has said anything specific, so we're really just reacting to 3rd-party rumors.

They made the chassis big enough to hold everything they want inside, and no bigger. I don't think the "thinness" people whine about contributes at all to the slow production.

I'm more annoyed that the 21.5" doesn't have an SSD-only CTO option. For my home 27", I'll be grabbing the 3TB fusion and probably upgrading it myself to 4.5TB with aftermarket parts, but for my business I wanted all-solid-state resilient terminals. The smaller iMac, using a 256GB SSD (or possibly even a 128GB SSD) would have offered that.

Funny u.
Try to order 27" iMac. And write this post again...

I guess you live under a rock, or you are not one of the readers of this fourm,

Quick look on the order chart+ apple quarter call will tell you the whole story, people are waiting more then a month for a computer.apple is struggling to produce them, and the end of this situations isn't close.
