Your iPhone 4 BRICKED After 4.0.1? READ ME

1.) Reinstall iTunes using these guides:

2.) Update to 4.0.1 by using THESE .ipsw packages:

3.) Restart your computer.


4.) Once downloaded, click the restore/update button while holding ctrl (Windows) or option (OSX) and then select the downloaded .ipsw package.


5.) Wait for phone to update.


This has worked for many people (myself included), who had their iPhones bricked from using their current installation of iTunes and the .ipsw downloaded automatically through iTunes.

Any details other than completely blaming apple would be great. Because if it goes smooth 99% of others users than something must have went wrong as in your computer or human error.

i bet people are pulling the wire out too soon, you have to let it restart and then sync with the computer again, then you can pull it out.

You are probably right, though I can say I and many other members have used this site before - it's well known and not shady.

Anything you try online from forums could "ruin" your device. Apple would have no way of detecting if a custom OS was ever installed on your device, unless you brought it in to the store in such a fashion.

I followed Apple's guide. Plugging/Unplugging isn't necessary.

The issue isn't 4.01. The issue is that the phone has issues exiting out of recovery mode after the firmware is applied. I'm not sure why some phones have issues, BUT there's a way to force it out of recovery mode. There's a little app called RecBoot (latest version is 1.02, i think). It's purpose is to let you go into and out of recovery mode with a click of the mouse. Use this app to force the phone out of recovery mode and VOILA! Your phone will now boot up with 4.01 so you can get started with restoring your last backup.

THere's two apps with Recboot. Use the Exit one. Click on exit and then disconnect your phone from your computer as soon as your phone goes blank.

i did that and it just told me to plug it into itunes again. any other ideas?

i keep on doing that but then it freezes when it's 2/3rds done.
