People who have read receipts turned off make me suspicious and uncomfortable. What are you hiding?
Absolutely nothing. Just want to protect the people like yourself that have “read/reply anxiety” from having a panic attack when you think you’ve been left on “read” (I’m only speaking for myself from this point on) when in actual reality - I read the message and was going to/or in the process of reply but got distracted by something else that required my attention.

It’s not you, it’s me.

Nothing at all. There are people who expect others to message back right away after it’s read. So I have it off. I’ll get to them when I can. And if it makes people like you suspicious and uncomfortable, even better.

Nothing. I just don't/can't always reply right away. I turn it off so you don't get butt hurt.
Exactly. We all have those friends that if you don’t reply to their message right away they call you wondering why you didn’t reply. Usually they’re older but not always. Sometimes you’re busy doing something, tired or just need time to think of a reply. Some people don’t understand that all text messages don’t require an immediate reply.

If you don’t have this issue then that friend is probably you ?

A better question is why do you want to see when I've read your message? The suspicious behavior is needing to know this. It makes you a stalker.
For me knowing you read my text is not about stalking you, but know that you actually got the message.

You can reply when you want, but at least I know the message was received by you and not only by your phone.

Do you think telemarketers who leave a voicemail should be notified as soon as you listen to it? If Discover sends you a letter in the mail saying you should apply for a credit card, should it alert them as soon as you open the envelope? Should people and companies be told as soon as you receive every message, or should you be able to tell them if or when you’re ready to?

Ha!. Who uses iMessage still in the world as their primary messaging app having so many other better alternatives??. Apple only fixes things for:USA market ir China pushes them. Sadly soooo many other things are broken in iOS since a few years ago (were working, then broken or removed), but Apple only sees the American market. The rest of us are null. This will be fixed in less than 1 month, all other stuff that does not appear USA market will never be fixed.

I guess having iMessage syncs with iCloud to all devices is not an easy thing? Is it an iCloud problem or iMessage problem?

You're looking at privacy wrong. As they said in the film Anon -

"It's not that I have anything to hide, I just don't have anything I want you to see"

You're not entitled to other people's information, it's up to them to let you have it.
Sure. My tone has obviously been misjudged here. I thought "suspicious and uncomfortable" was enough of an obvious over-reaction that it would be clear I was making a bit of a silly joke, but that's obviously not the case, so I apologise to everyone who has been offended by my post.

Does anyone really care if their message was read but the recipient isn’t replying quickly?
In today's world, social or professional, the advent of "Read" status creates the expectation of immediate response. It's the unfortunate side effect of these instant messaging.
I turned off mine on whatsapp. A written message is that, a written message. That is low priority in my book. For higher priority, call me.

Splintering message yet again is not a good thing. We didn't need to create SMS when email already existed; we just needed to make email more real time and easier to interface. But, foolishly, we splintered messaging when we did that.

iMessage, for its good or bad, uses the same interface as SMS, so it's not a functional splintering. The user doesn't really know or care.

FB Messenger, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Signal, all these other messaging platforms splintering. Now, I have multiple apps and channels for messaging. I'm worse off. It's not good or helpful to people to have to be on so many platforms to communicate.

The rest of the world uses other things because many of their carriers still charge for SMS. The right answer is eliminating that, not splintering messaging all over the place.

We all have people in our lives who have actually complained that we don't have read receipts turned on. While you were joking, they were not.
