We go need a way of presenting data to a user in a much quicker and simpler way than the way iOS currently does.

"come on, we're late, the movie it going to start, and we're in the car waiting for you"

Ok, let me turn my iPad on.

Ok, tap on the email app, full screen, nope, no email.
Now let's run my facebook app just to check nothing I need to deal with.
Ok, so lets run my Twitter app to see if any updates.
Let's then run my weather app to see if I need to take a coat.

etc etc.............

We need a better way than this.

Wrong. It was a problem in the past but not now. Things like expose, mission control, etc. We can easily stack windows now, group them and have them autosized neatly.

Playbook and webos is on right track. They need a ios for the tablet.

I don't think WebOS or PlayBook are different in this particular situation. From what I've seen neither of them allow you to interact with one App while viewing another. You can see multiple Apps while switching between them but that wouldn't help you take notes on a web page.

Well yes there is that!

But you could also enable notifications and see a red dot on each app you listed to see if and how many emails - posts you need to look at or have.

You could also look at your phone for all this since you are on the run and your friends are waiting in the car and I'm pretty sure that most people that are using an iPad also have some sort of smart phone too.

So yes Apple could improve on the notifications but it's not as bad as you make it out to be.

While the iPad's screen is fair size, I don't see it being enough to handle two app windows at the same time, and be able to use them comfortably.

yeah, I don't think it would work very well. I see it being a feature I would use a few times to try it out and then decide it's impractical and not use it.

Here's a better way:
You're not so important that you need to check your e-mail at the last minute like this (and you would have had an audible alert anyway); Facebook can wait (if there's a message are you going to delay going to the movie? If the issue is that urgent nobody's going to message you on FB about it); Twitter when your friends are waiting in the car? come on; and look out the window to see if you need a coat or not.

seriously this is total lol, checking Twitter, mail, weather, and FB, when people are already in the car waiting, what a ludicrous scenario

if you're this dependent on this information just get an iPhone and fondle it in the car on the way to the movie, problem solved

Its a feature. There is no con in having an added optional feature.

Unless its implementation has unintended consequences, like increased demand on the hardware, complicated UI both visually and at a tactile level, programming issues for developers, and all the things someone who has never had to actually implement this function will never think of. It's not just a feature; it's a technical and conceptual alteration with big implications.

No one is saying you're required to have two windows. Developers can implement the function into their app if they choose to do so. Regardless, it's more Apple's engineering. Simply scaling the Apps could suffice.

The thing is, if you were running a Windows mobile phone or Android Honeycomb, you could just glance at the one home screen, see there was nothing and you'd be ready to go in a second.

Not having to individually run full screen apps one at a time as we currently have to do with iOS devices.

I don't like having to resize o rearrange windows so I'm happy with full screen app. In addition apps can take advantage of the more screen estate, which is nice.
I was pointing out that this GUI makes it impossible to work with two overlapped windows, and multitask between apps with the Home button could be annoying. Anyway I think that in the future, multitouch gestures could help switching apps.

I also second those who asked for quick look apps' updates, but this is another topic.

Thanks to everyone who answered!

Although I would kind of like to be able to have access to a couple of windows I see the limitations of this. (although screen size I don't think would be a problem since ny netbook is the same size and it's not an issue there).

I would like to point out that you do not have to go back to the home screen to access apps in in the background. If you are in one program and have others in the background you can do a double click on the home button and it brings up the multi-task/task manager at the bottom of the screen. This does at least same some clicks.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Mac OS X, google the feature called "Spaces":
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1624

I believe a derivative of this will be implemented in IOS 5. This would provide that "windowed" effect.:
