rebranding is ok with me. not that i really care how they call their notebooks. powerbook was a crappy name and i still loved my PB.

as for the 13"MBP it will depend on screen quality. if that is great it's a MBP for me. if not it's consumer grade but still a great notebook. i wish there was a matte option but it seems the antiglare foils are quite good.

the other features are there: fast CPU, fast enough GPU, DVD, FW800, USB2.0.

only things missing are 7200rpm HD's but that can be done aftermarket and expresscard slot. expresscard slot is really the only thing that pro's might miss.

12" Powerbook users have been begging for years for the return of a smaller pb/mbp finally it came.

That was my first thought, 13" MBP = new 12" PowerBook

I don't really care about the rebranding, just do SOMETHING to the plastic MacBook. I wouldn't care about it being an old design except every one of the things I've seen outside a display cabinet has been cracked to pieces.

Doesn't really matter to me. I've used Macs for fifteen years and I've bought portables based on the spec, not whether it was marketed as pro or consumer. I have a friend who is so proud of her "pro" MBP but she can't even tell firewire from ethernet from display port. Clearly, there are real pros and people who just buy into any gimmick.

There are other things “pro” users do besides heavy graphics applications.

Excel anyone? Audio producers? Photography?

In fact, the only users who need a lot of graphics performance are the ones who game or do intensive CAD type work….in which case, why are you buying a 13” laptop?

THANK YOU!

I am so sick of this "it has integrated graphics, it's not a 'Pro' machine" argument. The fact is, there are plenty of professional applications that do not require discrete graphics. In fact, I'll wager most of what professionals are buying a notebook for do not. MacBooks are very popular for audio production - no need for high-end graphics there. Video editing? Nope, not unless you're doing lots of Colour or Motion work. Statistical software? Nope.

Integrated vs. Discrete graphics is a complete non-starter. It hardly makes or breaks a "Pro" machine.

Understanding that "Pro" is just a marketing term, i am quite pleased with the rebranding. More features, less money. What sane person would complain about that?

None, you're the man! - But, your post/statement is insanely broad...which makes it a moot point...

your statement makes sense for the MBP, but not for the MB... :(

P.S. NoSmokingBandit, if you explain a little more on what you are talking about then I will get back to you with a better answer...goodluck.

The added a cool stuff to the 13" unibody like the battery and backlit KB, and then lowered the price. Some people will get fussy because their 17" uMBP is now in the same class as the 13"uMBP, but the "Pro" really doesnt mean anything, it all boils down to specs. I dont care if the called the 13" "macbook crackwhore" (ok, maybe i'd care a little) because its got the features of a Pro with the cost of a non-pro, so i dont see why some people are complaining unless they really are the elitist ******s the public views all mac users as.

It doesn't make sense to kill the whitebook because clearly they are up to something and they are stalling. They must be close to releasing it since they went ahead with the rebranding.

Exactly, they must be doing something with the macbook range. I do think it's rather strange though, to keep the white macbook as it's chunky etc compared to most modern computers. But the unibody (unless made of plastic) is not taken by the pro range.

I only joined the Mac scene recently and got the 2.4ghz UMB with the display etc, and not it's already of out date, grrrr. I did think at the time there must be a demand for a smaller pro macbook, in fact it's the reason I chose this over the MBP - portability.
