No. The 5S would be a new phone that has the same look as the 5 but with completely new internals and based in previous "S" phones, at least twice as fast.

Why would it be a faster faster 4S? The 5 is nothing like the 4S.

Same functionality, just faster.

What would the 5S be without one? Just a faster faster 4s?

You mean a faster 5.

Your crazy, the 5 is arguably the biggest leap in one year since the first iPhone. LTE, complete redesign, increased screen size, 2 times faster than 4S, lightning connector, improved camera (especially in low light) and crazy thin and light.

I think apple is going to put the fingerprint reader at the back of the phone where the apple logo is. You will be using the pointer to unlock and it's more natural that way IMO.

I think a fingerprint scanner is silly and borderline gimmicky.

A quality fingerprint scanner uses temperature and moisture to help verify its not being fooled. They don't work well in varying weather conditions a phone sees. Fingerprint scanners without that aren't very secure.

Cases and screen protectors already defeat a quality fingerprint scanner.

Devs won't have access to the fingerprint hardware and software. That's too dangerous of information to steal so easily. Apple wouldn't allow that (or so I'd hope). So nothing really interesting would happen with it.

People think because government agencies use fingerprints to identify people its "secure". It's not its just good at identifying people. A long passcode committed to only memory is much much much more secure.

I think its a solution looking for a problem.

Have fun remembering your truly secure passwords the rest of your life.

Developers will not have direct, low-level access to the hardware to grab your fingerprint. However, developers should be able to call a software routine that would generate a key (I.e., a long number of 1s and 0s) based on the unique combination of your fingerprint and the device hardware. That key could then be compared to the fingerprint "key" previously setup on the device.

Remember one thing for the rest of my life?!?! Woe is me!!! What a terrible reality that would be!! One whole thing! I'm assuming you have forgotten your Apple ID password quite often huh?

Fortunately I have the mental capacity to remember one thing. However I only use a 4 pin passcode which is still arguably more secure. Hasn't everyone/anyone with a scanner on devices already played with it till defeat? They beat one on mythbusters with a photocopy of a print lol.

Ever wonder why security is moving AWAY from that tech?

Guessing a passcode is a pain, and its simply that, guessing. Pulling a fingerprint is also a pain, but its not guessing.

And it's generally slower then nailing in a 4 pin code.

Nearly half the people I see with iPhones never use a passcode. So there goes any and all reason to upgrade for them.

It's just my opinion but unless there is other functionality for it besides unlocking your phone it just screams gimmick.

Another thing to add is there will have to be an alternative unlock in case of a cut finger. So any security is still going to rely on a passcode. Similar to facial recognition on Android, when it fails it resorts to a passcode.

And anytime two methods of entry are allowed security is drastically reduced.
