No-one's mentioned Pearlyrics. I love that thing. I can spend hours staring at it. Of course everyone else says I need a life but what do they know :D
Seems to be off again at the mo though. Hmm.

PearLyrics is my favorite widget too. It's really too bad that the music industry decided to shut it down. Glad I got a copy before that happened. Just by running that widget, with no further effort on my part, I have lyrics for almost all of my iTunes songs in both iTunes and on my iPod. On the 5G iPod, you can press the center button 4 times and it'll display lyrics for the current song (assuming there are any).

I guess the other two I'd mention are SimpsonBot and Marquee. SimpsonBot shows random Simpsons quotes, and Marquee shows up-to-date movie showtimes for theaters in your area.

Useful:

1. Dictionary/thesaurus
2. Currency/Volume converter etc
3. Calculator

Waste of space:

1. Whoopie Cushion
2. GoGoRedball
3. Clock

Since i'm new to mac I just started downloading widgets... my theory at the moment is I'm trying to cram the screen with as much useless crap as possible... it's great :) I've got christmas lights on the outside, this day in history, snapple facts, view surf webcam, espn news/scores, countdown to halloween and of course... weather :) As you can see I enjoy overkill. :D

Edit: I forgot I was only supposed to list 3... sorry!

funnily enough I just removed most of my widgets yesterday. Although I didn't use many. I've just left the cream of the crap.

1. The World Clock is the one I use the most to check when the next football match will start in London, or the cricket in India

2. I've just replaced the Calculator widget with Calculon which I find more useful as I can see what I've typed in so I don't have to fret about whether something was entered correctly or not.

That's all I use at the moment. But if I started addressing envelopes more than I do now I'd certainly be using the the Easy Envelopes widget. And I also like the Coin Flip widget for those times when I need to flip a coin or throw a dice (fondly remembers the Dice Man by Luke Reinhardt)

Instead of the weather widget which I found to be not that accurate I prefer this as it helps me predict what time the weather will peak.

The ones I use most at the moment...

1. The weather widget (with various instances open)
2. The Unit Convertor (my Powerbook came baking with me one day!)
3. The Album Art widget since it looks up songs with no art and I can add it to my iTunes library with one click.

But most of the others listed above are pretty useful too. The only other ones I use regularly that haven't been mentioned are a personalised countdown widget and a Photo widget that pulls random shots out of an iPhoto album onto a 'polaroid'.
could you by chance tell me the name of the photo widget or where you got it? i looked on apple.com but had trouble locating it...

iStat nano - I use it mainly to check my uptime, although it's cool for checking temperatures, disk usage, and other stuff like that every once in a while as well.

Weather Widget - This is probably the single-most convenient widget. I use it almost on a daily basis.

del.icio.us Widget - I just started using del.icio.us yesterday, so I don't know how useful this one will be, but I just thought I'd mention it.

iCal Events

Calculon (which is a very simple, but effective calculator, written by someone who comes, or used to come, here, and which shows you the operations as you type them in until the "=" -- i.e. (8+14)/2)

World Clock, although I go on and off using it. It lets me know what time it is where someone I love is, in the Netherlands. :) But I just kind of have a general idea in my mind, so I'm not sure it's even running now, since my iBook is low on processing power.

dictionary
translator - can be slow but handy
radio tuner - useful for less easy to find stations (espsecially those accessible by the mac) - there is an up-to-date list of stations that can be programmed in

Another one that I like, but is not in my top three because it's one you look at, not use, is

sunlit earth dashboard widget

I'm still at that "ooooooh! widgets!" stage as I just got Tiger, but I think I use the Dictionary, the Address Book and the Fetch (FTP) widgets the most. I've found the Weather widget to be pretty useless in the UK, but it may just be me.

For a design slant, may I recommend the Colourmod widget, for colour picking? Not that I've never used it, :p but I came across it a while back during a project and it's one of the few graphicy ones I've come across.

1) miniCPUheat. Doesn't work on Mac Mini though ... sucks.
2) World clock. Useful for figuring out when to talk to my friends.
3) Calendar. I dislike having the day of the week in the menu bar; it wastes space.

I use the standard unit converter for converting units (duh!), the standard weather widgets for the weather around the world where I've got family and the standard clocks for around the world where I've got family so I know how tired/annoyed they're going to be when they pick up the phone at 3am!

I also have the Maui Real Estate Search widget just in case my Lotto numbers come up.

Here's my top three:
.....
#1 Widget is...ImageShack: It makes uploading pictures to MacRumors much easier. It's really handy and easy to use. I like the drag, hit F12, drag onto widget functionality.

linky?
i searched apple's site to no avail.
thank ye.

The three I use most are:

1. UK TV Guide - so I can see what's on telly (obviously).

2. Calculator - just the standard one, but quicker to launch than the full calculator app.

3. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game widget - the very old (but very funny) text based adventure game in a widget. This is used to be on the Apple website, but was taken down a while ago.

Weather..... obvious reasons

World Clock.... set to London time where my girlfriend is studying

Countdown..... set to when she comes home. 38 days 9 hours 43 minutes...... how handy is that info

Since I travel all over the world and have friends and family in many countries the 3 widgets I absolutely need are:

- FlipClock (for multiple cities, since it looks better than the Appleone)
- Weather widget
- Sunlit Earth (to see where the sun is atm)

But besides those I definitely have to mention:

- Looking forward (to keep track of all upcoming events)
- PearLyrics

I try to keep everything relatively clean and only have like 15 widgets at any1 time. If you have to look for the information you need Dashboard loses its purpose.

Edit: Thx to Dale for the name of Sunlit Earth, had forgotten it :)

1. Say Cheese - Daily comics. (I only read the Calvin and Hobbes-strip, but it's still my nr. 1 widget)
2. iStat - system monitor
3. the Wikipedia widget - very useful
