I always wonder what’s the point of this? Because their is no way a phone display has the brightness to properly or effectively show HDR content, it surely is nothing more then a marketing gimmick?

It only took them a month to add HDR support for new iPhone
How do you do that? I have Purify for my Safari browser but I think I still see ads for YouTube if I remember correctly. No thanks. I can block ads on YouTube in safari, but not in the app. Unless there is a way I don’t know about.

Awesome, I'll give those a try. Really wish we could use uBlock Origin in Safari againI use Wipr in Catalina and 1blocker legacy on iOS. I haven't seen an ad before videos in a very long time.
Well, both will switch to AV1 eventually but until then Google likely isn’t going to spent money on transcoding 4K videos to H.265 solely for Apple users. Can Google and Apple find a way for iOS to play back 4K on YouTube?
I recently bought 1Blocker X and enabled all options except ‘block comments’, yet I see ads in the YT app like before. I read in the reviews that it blocks ads for other people, but since there is no dedicated toggle for this, idk how to enable it. :/I use Wipr in Catalina and 1blocker legacy on iOS. LG are not the best and 1200 max NITS is not enough. The 11 Pros hit 1200 nits peak HDR brightness, in case you didn’t know.
And since the point of high brightness is for high contract ratio, OLED displays don’t need as high of a brightness as LCD displays do, due to being able to display true blacks. None of the LG OLED TVs even reach 1000 nits, and yet they’re still among the best HDR TVs.
LG are not the best and 1200 max NITS is not enough.
And actual studios use Panasonic TVs....Sony and LG's OLED TVs are rated as the best TVs for HDR movies, despite of none of them even reaching 1000 nits. Why? They simply have far better contrast due to true blacks. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, which is essentially just high contrast. It's not just a matter of absolute brightness.

Yea I would like to know that tooJust curious how Youtube is presenting HDR on the iPhone given the codec standoff. Is it software decoding AV1?
they are discretely telling you “hey, switch to Android, you will always get latest stuff immediately.”
“no?”
“Fine then! Let’s see how much you like waiting!”
What’s the brightness set at on the 11 Pro? You should always manually adjust the brightness to 100% before watching a HDR video (you may also need to disable auto brightness in accessibility).I think the HDR implementation in the current youtube app on the Iphone 11 pro max is fake! A couple of days ago, I compared youtube videos on my Iphone 11 pro max with some colleagues having a Galaxy S10, and an Iphone X, both supporting HDR and playing the same video.
On that time, the HDR functionality was still unavailable in youtube for the newest generation of iphones . Visual results were clear: the Galaxy S10 and the IPhone X clearly beat the 11 pro max in terms of dynamic range. We now retested with the HDR option enabled, but visual results remained the same... The iphone 11 pro max clearly underperformed!
Video which was used was following:.
The video itself needs to in HDR. I don’t know a single YouTuber who produces all of their videos in HDR.I still don’t see it, unless mkbhd has no hdr turned on
