The new app is a mess but they've fixed the things that were making the previous version unusable for me, namely the autoplay, subtitles, multiple users, and skip video in a playlist, so I'm kinda happy with it. The previous version was just not working for me.

I already made one comment on this subject and am not one that is usually in to ranting but .... damn youtube is so much worse now.
I am actively using it less and less per day because of the tv app update.

Getting through my subscriptions is now "easier" and I say that with a lot of reserve, by going to the search bar which takes you to another search bar and voice searching which is a terrible way to do it and I dislike but is easier than the even more terrible way of scrubbing through some of my least watched subscriptions because a person I like happens to have a name near the end of the alphabet.
Can it not order your subs by most watched?
YouTube itself doesn't even put subs in alphabetical order.

The only positive I can get from this is the it looks a little better than the previous but the layout simply is not simple to use anymore.

DoubleYou Tee Eff YouTube AppleTV UI people, DoubleYou Tee Eff.

I agree, last night I was scrolling through the recommended videos, which used to be spot on, and now there's nothing I'm interested in watching. I struggled to find the content that I was literally watching daily, and couldn't find it. I have no idea how YouTube was working so well for me, and now it's the least intuitive app I use. For some reason it's pulling YouTube videos related to websites I visit during the day, as somehow all the things I google are things I want to watch for entertainment. It seems like it's just become one big ad and marketing tool.

How do we rate it on the Apple TV App Store?

You need to go to the App Store on your Apple TV, search for YouTube and you can give it a 1-5 star rating. That's sadly all you can do when it comes to tvOS-app. Some people leave negative reviews on the iPhone and iPad (iOS) app with a written review as well.

I don't really understand why the recommended algorithm would be different but it does indeed seem to be different. It keeps recommending me much older videos, many which I have viewed before.

The search feature in the new YouTube app is not working at all on my side, and I was wondering if no one else is mentioning it, maybe it’s just me?

I mean it doesn’t work at all. When I get to the search screen, my remote arrows don’t work, so I can’t select the characters. At first I thought I had a work around by using my iPhone as a keyboard, and it works... until I need to actually scroll to the video selections that appears on the right, but I can’t move the cursor, so I’m stuck.

The only way I can search and watch videos on YouTube now is by actually searching and playing them on my iPhone, then sending them to my AppleTV over AirPlay.

Talk about a downgrade

This is an example of why Google will never get a dime of my money for any of their crapware. This new app is the pinnacle of poor UI design, what a POS. At least in the old Apple TV app, scrubbing was a breeze. Try scrubbing through a video in this travesty... did they code it in BASIC?

Google is such a awkward company. They are doing so many good things, but at the same time they keeping doing so many horrible things. You can't trust them to not make something you love into something you hate in no time its not even funny. And they keep coming with great hardware and software that might become abandon-ware six months later..

Any company with a vision of the future will go through such iterations. Otherwise they’ll become stagnant the way many big companies like Nokia, Microsoft, Sony has become.

Wow, yes the old app was missing key functionalities, like navigating to a channel from a video, comments, and some other nice to have actions i could otherwise take in the phone or ipad app... but HOLY **** THIS NEW APP IS BAD.

It brought back the terrible "touch to seek" from early days of apple tv. you touch your remote by mistake, and boom you skip through the video. I now spend more time navigating to my subscriptions than opening my phone, find the video, and airplaying it

how did apple even let this one through??? Its a crappy android app in a apple OS store

Google folded its VP10 work into AV1 along with work from Cisco and Xiph.org, and even Apple now after a long time finally joined MS, Google, Amazon, Netflix, Cisco and others in the Alliance for Open Media in regards to AV1, though most of the work on the codec seems to be done at this point. Good to see more competition against Movie Picture Experts Group and their proprietary codecs.

As for VP9 it has pretty wide hardware support including Intel/AMD CPUs in laptops/desktops and ARM chips in a lot of phones/media players. It’s probably just Apple not wanting to meet the usage terms.

I frankly couldn't care less. The YouTube app for Apple TV is still utter garbage, months down the line.

They can't even implement frame rate switching properly. The scrolling along a timeline is still broken. It's that bad that I now mirror from an iPad as that's the only way to get satisfactory performance.

If it’s still that way with YouTube, I was hung up between the Apple TV4K and nVidia Shield, guess it’s the Shield then with an app for Airplay. YouTube is ok on the Roku Ultra as well. Guess they really dropped the ball on the TVOS version.

The most recent changes made to YT app on tvOS is really, really awful, granted it looks very similar to all other mobile devices, however, it just sucks in the worst way possible. On top of the horrible interface, my history and watchlist is no longer linked with my other devices, and, yes, I am signed in to the same account. I just hate google more and more with stuff like this. I wish people would use Vimeo instead.

> However, AirPlay from my iOS devices works great, in fact, better than using the tvOS app, if I pause, I don't get bombarded with all kinds of stuff all over the screen, I just get the usual bar at bottom.

But, I don't think the YouTube app should be the factor for what streaming device you get, not by any means. (Unless you pay for YouTube, I guess.)
