Like this reviewer says, just replace your old Apple TV with the new Chromecast with Google TV. Unlike earlier models, this Chromecast has a voice remote and a full on-screen UI that runs Android TV apps inside a new content aggregation system called Google TV. So while you still have the option of casting to it from other devices, you don't have to.

IMO, it's the best streamer you can get for $50. I have an Apple TV 4K and love it but it's an expensive device. Bought my parents the new Chromecast as a Christmas gift and it's pretty nice. It even runs the Apple TV app now. Doesn't have other Apple apps, though, like Apple Music or Arcade. If you need those on your TV, you'll need the Apple TV HD or 4K.
How come it doesn't support airplay? chrome cast is kinda meh, really restricts your options. hahahaha see what I did there? Beat the droidbots to the punch

YouTube on Apple TV HD is buggy as hell. Every few weeks the cursor ceases to function. I have to delete the app and reinstall it to get it working. Anyone have a fix? Awful.
I use it daily and have never had to remove and reinstall the app for any reason. That's strange, and I don't understand how the cursor not moving could be saved in a setting somewhere...

I have a 3rd gen Apple TV on a spare tv and this is disappointing as it's to have access and for a guest to use who doesn't have an iOS device. YouTube could've supported it for a couple more years longer at least but this is why external devices for TV are ultimately temporary, even a brand new Apple TV is ultimately doomed to die slowly through a lack of support.
Spend $30 and buy any other streaming stick? This is a ten year old hardware with little to no users actually using it.

TVs with built in apps last 2 years.

“Those who have a third-generation Apple TV that are thinking of upgrading might want to hold off, as there is a refresh rumored to be coming later this year.”

Where have I heard that before? I’ve been waiting to upgrade for years.

Not to worry, they are definitely being released along with AirTags and a notchless iPhone Pro with USB-C.

Viewing YouTube content on the YouTube app on any device is absolutely the worst way to way watch YouTube stuff. The app has total control of everything - including forcing non payers to watch ads.

Do yourself a favor and watch YouTube through a browser but not safari

YouTube sucks period. 10 seconds of ads in the beginning and middle of a 30-second video.

Reading these comments like.... Come on! We all make at least over 70k a year. Don't bother complaining. Just get a new generation AppleTV. It's the Apple privilege.

This has nothing to do with Apple. Google decided to no longer support aging hardware and likely a few thousand people using this old ass app.

APPLE did not remove YouTube.

Can you repeat that?

Can we get a new version before we start disabling v3? I understand the device is 9 years old, but I'm looking to replace the v3 that's in my bedroom, however, I'm not gonna do that until v5 is released, since the current 4k version is 3-1/2 years old. Just get on it Apple

The Youtube app on the newest Apple TV is already the worst version of that app I've seen on any modern device. I'm surprised there was a worse one on the older Apple TV.
Couldn't agree more. The whole user experience is hideous. E.g. I don't know who thought that it is a good idea if almost the whole video gets covered just because you pause it.

This happens to me occasionally. I used to delete and reinstall but found that force quitting the app works for me. YMMV.

I have 3 of these things now just collecting dust since my tvs have Airplay 2 and the Apple app built in. This just reconfirm what I was hesitating to do, recycle them. They're pretty much useless now.

Dad is not pleased, and being a person who can barely use his phone, AirPlay is not a good solution.
You should look into the Roku Premiere. My parents didn't have a hard time switching over to it and it was on sale for $25

I still use one of these in the bedroom and airplay HBO Max all the time.

People tend to make a big deal out of these kind’ve things, but it’s literally 2-3 extra seconds out of my day to tap the logo in the corner and tap on the ATV I want to airplay to. It’s almost a non event really. For the few times I watch YouTube on it I expect the same.

Now when you’re not able to airplay anymore, then that’s an issue. Hopefully by then a new Apple TV will be out in the world.

It would be nice if they added PIP and UpNext functionality. The fact that that you can't even do it if you pay for youtube is frustrating.

Do us all a favor and pay for the content you consume.

This is a bit of a non-sequitur, but I really hope one day we see the rise of a legit YouTube competitor (and no, Vimeo is not that, as much as I love it).

As basically the monolithic Monopoly they can essentially do whatever they want.

This is ridiculous. Another example of unjustified tech obsolescence. There is no reason for this other than unwillingness to support older products. Thus making people to consider buying new and throwing the old one away. More waste in the making. If this was a toaster and the bakery told you that you need a new toaster to toast their bread you would laugh in their face. So why is it we think software companies can do the same and people just accept it?
