Smartphones should've never allowed it to begin with.
I had a Palm Pre (ugh) before I switched to iPhone, and it did exactly this. When you launched the video recorder, all the on-screen controls were forced into horizontal view, and if you were holding it vertically a warning popped up that said "turn phone sideways to record video."

Can someone please tell me WHY they refuse to put on-screen volume controls in their app??

It's the only reason I don't use it, and instead prefer TubeEx.

It may sound trivial, but it's really irritating when you have to continually search for the volume buttons when watching stuff in bed, for example.

I'd say this is the most requested feature of the app.

With regards to background playing, that one is simple: They don't want YouTube to be used as a free music app ...
My most requested feature is to flatten the ugly 3D-ish icon, does not fit well with the rest of my homescreen. First world problems, I guess.

And they still haven't replaced their own share menu with the native iOS share sheet, like they already did in most of their other apps... It really annoys me to only have 6 options to share a video instead of getting complete access to all my sharing extensions (e.g. WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Notes and Reminders in iOS 9)...

Have anyone had the new redesign layout for YouTube? Android received it recently and a friend of mine has gotten hers.

I've heard that the next iMac will have a revolutionary 9:16 aspect ratio to maximize the vertical video experience.

For me, it switched to material design about 1 1/2 months ago. But only on my iPhone, it still has the old design on my iPad...

I wonder what triggers the switch? Because it's not officially out yet. But very few have gotten the redesign while others still have the old design. I'm sure now that Android has gotten the redesign... iOS will officially have it.

Android and iOS (especially iOS since iPhone users come off as technologically inept) need to implement a feature where the video either DOES NOT RECORD while shot vertically OR when the video is shot, a warning pops up that calls out the user for their stupidity for shooting vertically and then saving the file and rotating 90 degrees to show drive their cluelessness home.

Is it so difficult for them to add audio continues play outside the app.......?.... the most requested feature.

Then you wouldn't see the ads. this is intentional. it works in safari though on youtube.com. leave safari and bring up control center and hit play.

THANK YOU!

VERTICAL VIDEOS ARE NEVER GOING AWAY. I avoided the YouTube app because it didn't work with them before. Safari supported vertical videos, just fine.

It is very easy to do with the APIs. But then you would be able to keep using your ghetto free "Spotify" music collection that happens to live on youtube's servers

The Palm Pres were AMAZING phones back then.

If your 1 year old is singing "Let it go" dancing right in front of you and you want to share it with your family, the BEST option is a vertical video. Because your family is going to consume it on their vertical phones. And the vertical video frames your kid perfectly up close.

Don't like it? Too bad

It's the worst option. Especially if its shared through youtube or something.

Why's it so hard for people to hold the phone horizontally?

I don't think that the tendency for people to hold their phones vertically whilst videoing is going to go away.
I do wish, though, that Apple et al would work some magic in their native camera apps; i.e. if a vertical video is sensed via the accelerometer, capture a full frame horizontal image. Hopefully this will come with 4K tech.

I wish Apple would do something like that. Actually, I think I made a similar comment a couple of years ago.

I updated the app and I am still not seeing vertical videos full screen. Does anyone else have this issue?

I updated and immediately tried it with vertical video without success this morning. Now I've tried it again and it works. I tested both times with the same videos and used the same route to get to them.
I make the videos full screen by pressing the full screen icon rather than rotating the phone. I know I did the same earlier today. So I've noooo idea what made the difference.

Sorry I don't have any suggestion except -- try it again in an hour?

Not a big fan of YouTube. They are finally killing off Flash, but not fast enough. I pretty much never go into youtube directly and my only experience is of videos embedded in an article I am reading that is hosted on the Google/Adobe platform. The unfortunate thing is that there does not seem to be much of an alternative.

I have at least 2 petabytes of cats sleeping that I want to load somewhere, but I am concerned that google will compromise my cat's privacy.:p:rolleyes:;)
