I recommend Vinegar Tube Cleaner plugin for Safari.
It replaces the YouTube player with its own. No YouTube restrictions from there on and no ads.
I don’t use apps when I can use a browser. Way more control over everything including privacy.

Always worked if you used Safari instead of the app. Wish they'd bring back Lite to our market as well. Oddly, we were a test market many years ago for Lite, they ended the test and then launched in other markets except here...

It was shameful to ever make this part of the paid plan - PiP playback is an OS feature… they don’t even program/maintain it, it’s just something your phone does.

Agreed.

This is clearly a case of special treatment for a megacorp with leverage over Apple here.

It's a bummer.

I also thought it was incredibly shortisighted by Alphabet to do this - who would you not want people to continue to be on your platform longer? Why would you not want them to be able to keep using YouTube even while they clicked away from the app?

You have to go back to iOS 3 or 4 for the last time you could close the YouTube app and whatever you were watching could play in the background

ITS BEEN SO LONG

The reason I don’t use YouTube in the browser (or only for random links) is exactly privacy, to keep my YouTube account separate from what I do on the web (that Google knows about). And also to not pollute my YouTube recommendations with random YouTube links opened in the browser.

While one could probably achieve something similar with browser profiles, using the app is simpler.

This is more about Google’s current push to get people off premium and back onto watching ads. Same with jacking up the prices. This isn’t them being generous to users. Google utterly sucks these days.

I've been using Vivaldi browser, to remove ads and allows PiP and background reproduction.
It's not the most consistent experience but it works for me.
Wish iOS was just more like a desktop OS. Feels like 20 years into the smartphone thing, we still don't get absolutely basic desktop features like "real" multitasking.

Oh man, this is big this will be great to be able to use the device while watching a video. I refuse to pay money for it but it has been a huge pain.

This reads like "we're going ahead and stopping this laughable business decision in countries with functional regulatory states that aren't as easily bought and sold."

Glad to hear they are rolling this out for free. I have about a 1 hour commute each way every day. Audible in the morning and on the way home I generally listen to a lecture or debate on Youtube. When something comes in that I need to check like an email or teams message I have to stop and switch apps. I don't care about the video as I am driving (or the car is driving me, thanks FSD!) and just want the audio and would like it to not stop if I need to quickly check something else.

I went to Brave so I could miss out on ads, PiP and shorts. Now they added the ability to remove shorts and get PiP back, they think I might come back? I use the app sometimes and it is so bad. I will pay when they let me read comments and keep the video visible.
