Almost daily for the last 8 years I have used to AirPlay YouTube from my iPad to my ATV3 with not a problem.

Actually I do prefer to watch YouTube in my ATV3 that way, instead of using the ATV3 channel do that purpose. I find AirPlaying much more easy to use.
I think it’s still handing off because if the Apple TV doesn’t have internet but just intranet ( as in my case) it won’t play with airplay. I have to connect my Apple TV 3rd gen to my iPhone hotspot in order to play YT videos.
Yet if I’m on my intranet and mirror my iPhone to play a game it works fine.

3rd gen Apple TV uses much older iOS*, not compatible with recent tvOS releases so of course YouTube is becoming EOL/obsolete on them. I have a couple of those old pucks, also a 4th and 5th gen that I use with a HD and 4K TVs.

* OS: iOS. Minimum OS – Apple TV Software 5.0 (iOS 5.1.1). Maximum OS – Apple TV Software 7.2 (iOS 8.3).
Realityck:
My HD(4th gen ATV?) gets commercials...my brothers 4K(5th gen?) doesn't. Is this your experience? Thanks.

This does not make sense... Doesn't Apple TV third gen run exactly the same OS as Apple TV 4th gen and later? I would understand if they are stuck at older AppleTV OS, but that is not the case.
No it doesn’t. The 3rd gen still uses the same old software as the previous two generations, not the newer tvOS that the 4th and 5th gen can run.

At this point, nobody will miss it. The YouTube app on the 3rd gen AppleTV is practically useless compared to YouTube apps on other devices (like Roku, which also has a simple UI, but one that is far more usable).
I will. I still have a 3rd gen and wasn’t planning to upgrade it anytime soon. Of course, I had not counted on the big techs and their planned obsolescence practices.

this makes me so sad and i dont even have a 3rd gen tv

Ya, my parents are in same boat. She doesn't like al the fancy tvOS stuff, Siri, nor the fact you can download apps..

She just wants the basic stuff to watch... but if i tell her tonight she must upgrade, it may be ok,, At least she has 3 weeks to decide. Kinda not wait till the last minute *might* soften the blow.

YouTube needs to stop this rubbish where trying to airplay content from my iOS device to the Apple TV just results in the Apple TV trying to launch the YouTube app to stream the content natively.

I teach with my iPad in the classroom, and my Apple TV is not connected to any network (since peer to peer AirPlay works automatically over Bluetooth). This basically means that I cannot stream any YouTube content from my iPad over, which is extremely frustrating.

Less convenient? I think using Airplay is more convenient. The YouTube ATV app was always slow to load and cumbersome for me to use. So no great loss as I haven’t used it in years.

Can anyone confirm :

My HD(4th gen ATV?) gets commercials...my brothers 4K(5th gen?) doesn't. Is this your experience? Thanks.

Had all kinds of problems today with air play on my 3rd gen. Must be me. YT kept saying an error has occurred and I had to use mirroring without going full screen in safari and just pinch to make it bigger on the tv but the quality was poor. Sigh

Why does it have to be removed? Can’t it just keep working without additional “support”?
exactly. I still have apple tv 3. still working wonders with netflix and youtube. i hate to use airplay every time using youtube on apple tv.

Im so bummed (
Android doesn't stream well to at

EDIT: sorry i don't get how this multi quote works? I was trying to quote by asbah and speg in the previous post

The inability to stream YouTube videos to my Apple TV from my iPad in class is literally one of my biggest bugbears. The Apple TV keeps trying to launch the YouTube app to stream the content, which of course fails because it isn’t connected to the internet.

Why does google keep trying to implement their apps and services in such atypical and roundabout ways that completely screw around with the user experience?

I disconnected my ATV and put it in a drawer. Gonna run with Roku until Apple pull their heads out.

Hope they continue to support the YouTubeTV app.
What are you talking about? support for youtube was only removed from the older 3rd gen apple tv, which actually never even got the youtubetv app in the first place. If you own a later model such as the Apple TV HD, Apple TV 4K or the 2021 Apple TV 4K -and judging by your comment it sounds like you do- then you should be ok. Both the regular youtube and youtubetv are still supported for those models.
