Just use the website set to desktop. You'll get an annoying message telling you to switch to mobile, but at least you'll get PiP.
Yeah I've stuck to using the site now, their app has always been trash and they keep forcing 3rd party ones to take away features. The only bad thing about the site is how it forces a html5 video player on iPad and can't go fullscreen like the native video player can.

Weird. I can do full screen on my iPad on the site.

Does it have a global Home button yet instead of tapping Back seven million times?

Does it have a Forward button to accompany Back?

Does it have a UI that makes sense for anyone but the engineers who designed it?

Does it have Picture-in-Picture yet without a subscription price?

Does it remember your history locally even if you have remote behavior-tracking disabled?

More big icons? ******* **** Google, this is not why I bought a 5.5" phone!

Why can't they implement background playback and picture-in-picture? That's two essential features the app has been lacking for way too long now. Picture-in-picture is a rather "new" feature in iOS, but the lack of background playback is getting beyond stupid at this point.

I'm listening to ASMR videos when I go to bed and I either have to have the video playing draining my battery and lighting up my bedroom or simply use another app like ProTube. Or I could force Safari to playback using YouTube.com but that's just silly. Why can't a company like Google implement such basic and essential features to such an important app???
They have implemented background playback. You need a $9.99/month Youtube Red subscription in order to use it.

Since I don't have an account, I am presented with damn ugly and stupid videos from "famous" Youtubers from here. Question, how the hell does it know my location? I don't remember being asked.
IP geolocation. Not illegal or uncommon.

And I haven't talked about lack of some core features that are missing. Like Picture-in-Picture on the iPad, or the ability to play audio when moving away from the app...
They'll happily allow audio to continue to play when you leave the app - if you pay them a monthly subscription for "YouTube Red"

Anyone remember the Jasmine app? It was the best Youtube app after the stock app was removed, Google was very quick to demand that it remove it's native player and instead load up a webview to play videos resulting in a nasty loading screen before each video and was during the time when background playback in Safari was broken which Google was probably praying wasn't a bug. You won't be able to use a 3rd party Youtube app these days without getting a update that removes features because Google demanded it. Google who preaches about being open and "don't be the same" probably hates they don't have absoulte control over this on PC/Mac, Safari on iOS and even on the PS4 using their own app they have no way of stopping you from turning off the TV and listening to videos using wireless headphones or the headphone jack on the controller.

Anyone know what the situation is like on Android? Is background video playback even possible on stock Android?

That's just silly. I can't even get YouTube RED in my region....

I'd also like to see what time it is during a video. I don't understand why they got rid of the top bar during a video and you can't even tap on it to see what time it is!! The old YouTube app prior to this ugly crap, was never a problem. Also you can see what time it is on android devices. Ugh Google!
