Doesn't rule out VP9 software decoding which is less taxing than h265 but still takes a hit on battery life. Easiest way to confirm is to compare battery life playing with and without HDR.

Why would it be less taxing when H265 hardware / partition hardware decoder is shipped with every iPhone since 6S.

Software decoding VP9 is less taxing than software decoding h265 so it's possible to do VP9 without hardware acceleration.

yes, but this implies apple does software decode h.265, on iOS which they don't.
 
Give it time, everyone. AV1 is a new and better codec that everyone will supposedly support and we won’t have to worry about this sort of problem ever again.

You know hardware h265 decode was only recently baked into iOS 11 around Sept 2017 time frame? Prior to that apps like Infuse had to resort to software decode.
