SJ 2011 probably never saw iOS 7 2013 alpha so he wasn't there to nix the opaque sound indicator.
I wonder what other interface items he would have kept or removed. Especially the headphone jack.

When I used to Jailbreak one of the first tweaks I installed was one where the top status bar would turn into the volume indicator and remove the awful default one!

As others have mentioned, I too would like a less obtrusive systemwide volume indicator, and I took the liberty of mocking one up a couple years ago.

While we're on the subject, can anyone explain to me the difference between "volume" and "ringer". Sometimes when I adjust the volume one or the other displays. Doesn't the overall system volume affect the ringer?

So google was lazy and just used apple's volume control and now after many years they have gotten around to creating their own volume control. But let's blame apple for google's laziness. Personally I try never to watch a video on an iphone -- too old and bad eyes. But when I have, the apple volume control has not bothered me. But that is me. If an app developer doesn't like Apples implementation, they are free to develop their own. But if you don't develop your own, don't cry about using apple's API - it was your choice to begin with, right?

Google's YouTube app is terrible. They wouldn't need this custom volume indicator if they included a volume slider in their video player. Apple's default video controls have included an on-screen volume slider since the first release of iOS. Forcing the user to fumble for the volume buttons on the side of the device instead of offering a volume slider just like every other video player on iOS is just anti-user.

Don't get me started on the lack of picture-in-picture support and background playback on the iPad.

They actually have changed it - but they made it worse. In iOS 6 we had a transparent square around the volume indicator, and you could at least see content behind it. In 7 onwards they decided to make the box almost opaque, therefore disrupting content. Who knows why they thought this was a good idea...

It still has the same basic layout, I don't think that the pre-ios 7 design was any better

When I read "Apple's Obtrusive Volume Indicator", at first I thought this was about that god-awful noise that plays by default every time you change the volume on a Mac. It's probably the first thing I disable the moment I start using any Mac.

It used to be transparent on both Mac and iOS - they changed it 3 or 4 years ago - and it wasn't a problem. They really need to change it back.

Awesome. Would also prefer an iOS setting to not show the overlay for volume changes.

I've never found it to be intrusive. I don't change volume repeatedly while watching videos.

Me neither, but it's still obtrusive the times I do. The volume indicator before iOS 7 was just as large, but more transparent – that was much better.

Sometimes I find YouTube itself annoying and obtrusive versus the volume control.

Care to explain but more? How is YouTube app annoying and obstructive?

So you blame Google using Apple's default UI?

I remember someone in this forum complaining Google uses Android UI for their iOS apps.

So now, it is Google's fault using Apple's default UI? We should all blame Google using default UI. And there is nothing wrong with Apple's part?

Volume is volume, you adjust the loudness of your media play back.

However, you would adjust how loud system notifications sound when you aren't playing any media.

Hence, volume is the loudness of your media playback. Ringer is loudness of your notifications sound.

I never said "Obstructive", I stated obtrusive. I find it convoluted with lack of picture in picture support, background playback is irritating, the over all layout is acceptable, but Google just riddles it with useless options. There are general areas that are annoying. Plenty of others have listed these concerns as well.

This was one of the reasons I went back to Android after trying a 6S for a couple of weeks last year.

It's things like the volume indicator taking up most of the centre of the screen that makes me wonder if Apple execs and product designers actually use iPhones in the real world.

If I was a big-wig at Apple, I'd call a meeting tomorrow and demand explanations for many iPhone design decisions. Another one being "Why does the iPhone force me to fill my home screen starting top left, furthest from my thumb?"

Not blaming anyone and I don't think anyone should be to blame. That was the point. From a dev perspective google made a choice. Fine. Now google has changed its mind and made a new choice. Fine again. But to blam Apple for googles choice seems silly. And yes Apple also made a choice in how they designed and created their volume control. Nothing wrong with that. Use it if you like, but live with it. If you don't like it, don't build your own. All the complaining about whose fault it is seems like a total waste of time to me.

My rant was about making a choice and then blaming Apple for your choice.

Thanks for the explanation. Sometimes there's the additional problem of "headphones" volume appearing even when headphones aren't plugged in. I believe this happens when dust or dirt get into the jack.
