I really, really hope that apple doesn't merge the music and podcasts app.

I keep considering trying YT music, especially as I pull up random obscure video game music and remixes on youtube all time, but I haven't fully committed yet. To be honest, I'm not trusting google to keep it up considering how their apps go a lot of the time.

These aren't podcasts. Podcasts are RSS feeds with media enclosures that you are free to play on any platform. This is a silo.
I watched a YouTube video where the person had spoken to a Google insider who said the plan IS for YouTube podcasts to work like regular podcasts! With YouTube being the hosting site.

i made the mistake of testing YouTube Music once in my life. Now I actually use and can’t let go of it. The app is BAD in unimaginable ways and is literally behind every other streaming app in many features. But i listen to a lot of unreleased songs, live performances and mashups, and the algorithm is way superior any other service. But man, everything else in the app is garbage…it’s torture

No, audio content on Spotify and YouTube aren’t “podcasts,” it’s proprietary to being played back within their systems. Podcasts are RSS feeds anyone can play anywhere.

There was a lot of talk that if in the YouTube app, you played a video, then put the app in the background and let the video keep playing (needed the $10/month YouTube Premium for this), that the video was no longer being downloaded. This was useful for like when you were in your car and didn’t want to use the data allowance in your mobile phone plan to download video you weren’t watching.

But this turned out to be ******** because YouTube doesn’t offer separate audio and video streams to download. If you were downloading the video, you were also downloading the video.

This article makes it sound like that feature is back again in the YouTube Music app. I hope it’s not ******** again.

I'm fairly sure current YouTube just streams the audio in that scenario. When I open the app back up and it has to play video again there's a pause while it fetches the video.

I just had a gap from Apple Music and bought YouTube music last week. I was quite excited at first, I watch a tonne of YouTube per day over Netflix or TV as of recent years. The ability to do it on the iPhone whilst multitasking is pretty cool! But the music app is disappointing. I tried to move over my music, I used an online service which put it all into a playlist on YT Music - but there's no mechanism or easy way to add them to my library as such. I Tried a few Chrome custom scripts which worked initially... but it's hard to know where it's up to, I suspect it times out every time in under five minutes, I just resubscribed to Apple One and will just enjoy PIP in the YouTube app for the rest of the month. I wish YouTube offered a £3.99 a month PIP option for iPhone.

Ugh, always so craptastic when companies try to do this nonsense. Just leave the app doing what it's good at, no "kitchen sink" app has ever worked well with absolutely everything force crammed into it.

Cancelled Spotify and subscribed to Youtube Premium recently, couldn't be happier. Probably the only service that isn't entirely captured by the mainstream. You can get some really cool recommendations from proper DIY bands

This. YouTube Premium not only gets you their Music but no ads on YouTube. Worth every penny to me and cheaper than other music only services.

Ah, YouTube Music, an app that exists so that no matter what problems you might have with Apple Music or Spotify or Tidal or whatever else, you can always rest secure knowing that your music service of choice is still much better than the hot mess that is the YouTube Music app. :p
I think YTM is miles better than AM. I get AM for free but prefer YTM.

Yea sadly I’m the same. I don’t think I’ve ever had it autogenerate a play list without it having several songs I hadn’t heard that I loved and mostly songs I heard and loved. It’s amazing.

Apple Music as so much that’s better than YT music app but most of the time I’m listening to those play lists and wondering how those songs made it in and why it thiught I’d like them. I don’t recall the last time I thought “I need to save this playlist” while using AM but it happens all the time on YT Music.
