I just got a kernel panic when watching 4K HDR in Chrome using the M1 Max MacBook Pro. Basically if you quickly go down to the comments section you might get it.
There have been a couple threads on that, which is thought to be the reason for the change this thread is about.

WOW I just noticed this. You are right, crazy!! Why would Google do this? I pay for YT Premium too.

EDIT: May have been temporarily halted by Google due to the KP bug that showed up. 12.1 beta doesn't crash for me when watching HDR so when it goes release they'll probably shift it back.

Confirmed that YouTube HDR came back instantly when I changed the User Agent to Chrome (Windows). It's so stupid. The HDR videos play fine without any problem on my M1 Pro 14-inch. The video quality is now on par (if not better) than my 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro.

This video finally looks super amazing.

Just tested. Zero problem on my 10/10c M1 Pro 14-inch.

For the kernel panic problem happening to some of the new MBPs, I think it's Apple's responsibility to fix this. It has nothing to do with Google. I don't know why Google just stopped HDR streaming to all Mac users just because of this. What if there are Mac users who connect their Macs to HDR capable screens? They lose it all too. It's beyond acceptable.

Yesterday I had an HDR option in chrome - and it crashed immediately when trying to play an HDR video. That HDR option is gone today.

Now, in both, Edge, Chrome highest YouTube playback resolution on HDR videos is 4320 8K

End users will think it's because of YouTube their Mac crashed, Google is likely just trying to save face.

How do you guys get HDR in Chrome? I still get bt709 when using chrome on youtube.

Btw, does this HDR restriction only happen with youtube or are Netflix and Apple TV also restricted?

4K HDR YouTube is still working brilliantly on my Razer Blade 4K OLED. It must be an Apple thing. ?

Yeah, my 4K Samsung TV plays the same videos in 4K HDR no problem too. So it is an Apple issue.

I am wondering however if Netflix and Apple TV are also affected and are not displaying HDR content.

Google disabled YouTube HDR on apple Macs . That's why you can spoof it using the useragent. We all assume they are doing this until apple fixes the YouTube HDR kernel panic bug on the new MBPs. Since it's still haven't been fixed (AFAIK. also it's still on beta even if it's fixed) google still disabled it.

And on other things it's fine. Even local HDR playbacks are fine.

YouTube still works in Chrome for HDR playback.

No it doesn't. My chrome was running 4k with HDR just fine before they decided to disable it. Now it doesn't show the HDR logo and stats shows it's only bt709. I am forcing vp9 only though since it's the only codec other than h264 that is hardware accelerated on the new macs. AV1 is software decoded and it's possible that they didn't disable HDR on those codec.

But still not all of em use AV1 codec.. so for most videos that don't use AV1 it's still disabled

Does it work in Netflix though? I watched some shows and it looked very bright to me?

I don’t think so. I don’t see the Dolby Vision logo on shows in Safari anymore. It was working fine even after YouTube disabled it but don’t see it anymore.
HDR: true, in Chrome it shows disabled, and the picture does look different too.

Edit: notice the video codec HEVC, DV there

Safari on left, Chrome on right. You can clearly see not only the "HDR" setting in Chrome but the image does appear way brighter and much richer in contrast showing that it is still in fact supporting HDR playback. Easier to see in person.

This doesn't work with all HDR youtube videos. Also, if you check stats for nerds, it is still bt709 despite showing the HDR label.

With the video in Chrome, do control (^)-click over the video and select Stats for nerds. If the color is listed as bt709, that's SDR.
