Would we also be able to use it with the screen off for audio only, I wonder? Right now this can be achieved by using YouTube in Safari with a forced Desktop mode, but it would be great if it worked with the YouTube app as well.

Why isn’t this something Apple can require all video apps to support? Individual apps shouldn’t get to decide whether they support PiP or not.

Oh and can YouTube please get smarter about where ads are inserted. There’s nothing more annoying that watching a concert and right in the middle of a song an ad comes up. You’d think their algorithms would be smart enough to place the ads in the right spot.

If you use Brave browser, it blocks YouTube ads automatically from playing before videos. It also lets you download videos seamlessly to their Brave playlist feature.
Do you know of any Shortcuts for YouTube video downloads? All the ones I have don’t work so I have to go back to Firefox on my laptop to do it. Those extensions work but I don’t believe they’re available/possible for iOS.

I’ve been using YT in Safari for years now. Adblock and the PiP shortcut rule. I don’t really get people that still use the app.
I can even play sound in the background or when the device is locked.
Some people don’t want features but convenience.
What’s the app? It drives me nuts you can’t play sound in the background.

Apple ought not allow core AVPlayer functionality to be paywall'd. Regardless of whether Youtube is essential or not, it is bad platform guardianship for Apple to not enforce better practices.

Of course, the problem here is that we essentially have tech industry "geopolitics" going on and Apple can't afford to treat Google like they would if I made a media streaming app that gated core OS functionality.

That being said, Youtube bringing this to all users was probably the result of discussions with Apple that we'll never know about barring another discovery session in the courts. Google got away with gating this under the auspicious "Experiment Feature" program for paying customers for over a year.

Sorry I don’t. All I use is the Brave browser on iOS. While watching any YouTube a button will appear in the URL bar for downloading. Then Brave saves it to a playlist where you can rearrange them, create folders etc.

This also allows playing music in the background, playing the video/audio while the phone is locked.

I'm saying, why doesn't apple make pip feature a standard feature of the os. Too busy with emojis.
It is a standard feature of AVPlayer. It simply requires engineering effort to wire up events for handling exit of an app and reentry into an app while PiP is engage. The rub comes when the existing video solution does not easily allow integration with what the standard player supports.

This should be a much improved experience! I honestly thought they would never release it. Better late than never I suppose.

Removing a feature of the OS and give it back to me if I pay was not cool.
So... you won't get my thanks for this, Google. Shame on you for not doing it before instead.

Slow to the plate. I’m surprised You Tube didn’t implement this sooner the technology has been around for a while

It is a standard feature.

What Apple does is make exceptions for major players who break the rules. Holding PiP hostage behind a paywall is absolutely against the App Store TOS and Apple allows it because it is YouTube.

I am confused I was able to activate PIP in my Youtube app on my iPhone. I have YouTube premium though.

The YouTube app doesn’t use the standard iOS video player.
Not that That’s an excuse for Google, picture in pictures should’ve been implemented two years ago, but it should be noted

I really wish my content creators would just move off of this platform already. For premium subscribers I *almost* understand.....and then they go on and say it's Android only, despite it working fine on iOS. And the thing about my content that I watch, it's ONLY available on YouTube and it has pretty much become my TV Replacement. A lot of tutorials etc are only on YouTube. Ugh.
