Was happening to me the other night at work, was watching YouTube on my iPad and every single video defaulted to the lowest quality, going to settings and changing it to default to "best video quality" did nothing.

Explains the last week or so. Resolutions from the RealPlayer era are crazy when you're streaming from home on a hard line.

Thank god, I was going crazy thinking it was my damn WiFi.

I was confused and frustrated as to why suddenly 90% of the videos I watched defaulted to 360p or less - glad to hear they are aware

Good to know it is a technical issue on YouTube end. I couldn’t understand how I was getting low quality streaming when have Gigabit speeds at home plus Wifi 6 devices and network.

Had faced this issue on my TV only for some time now and not on mobile devices. Would like to see it fixed soon.

Been seeing it on Apple TV native YT app several times lately. Don't know how long it's been happening, but the resolutions have only stepped down low enough in the last week maybe that I actually noticed (480p on a 50" TV) enough to check the resolution.

This has been happening on the most recent ATV 4k (and probably other models) for a long time. It’s very aggravating, streaming a YouTube video on a dedicated streaming device, on the official app, should be an easy feat to accomplish in 2025 for a company like Google.

Had this on my desktop a few days ago but didn't see the story until now. I was actually watching at 1080p (max for the video) then it suddenly popped into 360p about 15 minutes in. Refreshing gave me an error I'd never seen before. Fortunately refreshing a second time fixed it, and I haven't seen the issue since.
