YouTube has started testing a new two-person Premium subscription tier in some countries, offering a more affordable option for pairs of users who want ad-free viewing without committing to a full family plan (via Money Control).

The pilot program is currently limited to India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, with no immediate word on whether the tier will expand to other regions like the United States.

"We're experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost," a YouTube spokesperson confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch.

Similar to Spotify's Duo plan, the new tier is designed for two people living at the same address who want Premium benefits such as ad-free viewing and background play.

The test appears to be part of YouTube's efforts to diversify its subscription offerings and potentially recover subscribers who may have canceled after recent price increases.

The test follows YouTube's March rollout of Premium Lite, a lower-cost tier that offers ad-free viewing without YouTube Music access or certain other Premium features. The Lite plan is currently available in the United States, Australia, Germany, and Thailand.

Ok, maybe instead, YouTube scales down the number of payouts to their (COUGH COUGH...Content creators). Instead of paying for nonsense and frivolous content at times.

Ads just go on my “Do no buy list”. That is an expansion of what started with spam calls ignoring the Do Not Call registry and slamming me with stuff had no intention of buying, or if and when I did, they were at the bottom of the list with their competitor having higher priority. Now if that could become a national movement where slamming unwanted or inappropriate ads in you face was the kiss of death, would re-define ad policy.

Why are people so braindead buying their countries RRP? Like in Switzerland a family subscription costs roughly 35 Francs, aka 40€ / 45$ per month (!), while turks only pay roughly 3 bucks or so.

Seriously, if you want to have YouTube Premium just do it via Turkey, Argentina, India etc. If you are based in Europe, you can even subscribe to Ukraine plan for roughly 3,50€ per month (family) without the need of a VPN.

Options are good. The lite plan seems like a good fit for me and would have gone for it if I hadn't already renewed for a yearly plan in February. But depending on what this ends up being priced at then it also might be a good fit.

I would pay for an account that only removed adverts from videos. I don’t want or need YouTube Music as, guess what, I have Apple Music. I don’t know why that isn’t offered.

YouTube has made it much harder to subscribe to countries like Turkey, India, Argentina, etc if you don't have VPN access or especially a payment method from one of those countries.

And you absolutely need a VPN to subscribe with Ukrainian, or another country's, pricing if you're not physically there.

Like, $hare & $ubscribe.

Sometimes YT content slams and then sometimes it's just filler dreck. I'd consider a 2 person sub though to the adults in our home could have one and the kids another.

they've made it harder. I had it that way for a few years but it stopped sometime last year. was only paying about a dollar a month for premium.

I think you're missing the point of youtube. It is not like other streaming platforms and never will be. You're comparing apples to oranges.

I've never gotten the point of it, other to watch an occasional DIY video. I might watch 30 mins of youtube/month.

Just can't get interested in following "creators".
