Because user and view stats support that those kinds' of thumbnails/preview images bring in more clicks than less-cringey and ridiculous ones.

I don't know *why* that's the case, but it is and I can't really fault content creators from embracing that to draw in more views

I do understand that logic, and that's probably what's gotten us where we are today. The videos with cringey thumbnails were selected more, and through the magic of evolution we are where we are now.

So by that logic it's going to continue to get worse.

I do think that viewers will eventually get tired of it and those types of thumbnails will become so normal that they won't be as eye-catching and click-baiting as they once were and there'll be some new kind of thumbnail fad/style that will rise up to replace the current trends

But, in the meantime, it may get worse, yeah

It's because there's a significant audience that draws a great deal of their identity from a for-profit corporation. From that comes a dissonance and hostility when faced with the alternate viewpoint that corporations deserve not one inch more of servitude than what is defined by a bill of sale. I willingly pay for Apple products and get every penny of my money's worth. If Apple wishes me to play internet white knight, casting former employees to the wolves for imagined insolence long after their employee relationship has ended, they can pay me instead. Doing so for free is madness.
Very well said.

Remember the old saying "Those that can't do, teach"? Now it seems those that can't even teach, turn into a "content creator" 🤣
What are you talking about? This man is a brilliant science educator, an accomplished engineer helping design the brilliant landing hovering rocket crane system that was used to lower multiple Mars rovers, and he makes more money from YouTube with 22 million subscribers than his entire unit at Apple and NASA probably makes combined.

He started doing YouTube before Apple. Also between working at NASA and Apple he started a successful app-integrated costume company that he sold to a UK company, and he guest hosts for Jimmy Kimmel. The man can do it all.

You come across as jealous by being so dismissive of a clearly gifted person and one of the nicest guys on the internet. He does all of this while also caring for his autistic son and advocating for the cause, along with other charity work for organizations like Team Trees and Seas. Get on this guy's level and maybe you can talk, lol.

I think the end-game vision is that there won't be any more human controlled traffic. The cars talk to each other / the roads / the traffic control system and the humans just ride inside virtual reality eggs.

Considering how humans drive now and how many people die each year in car accidents, the bar is very very low. The hardest part will be machine drivers sharing the road with human drivers. Kind of a chicken and egg problem. Can't get the people off the road until autonomous driving is a near perfect replacement, but can't get there with a bunch of humans still on the road.
Indeed!

It'll start first with "zones" and "regions". "This roadway/path is restricted to machine driving only". Imagine "bicycle lanes", "bus lanes", and "truck lanes" that actually work (physically sectioned off in the limited areas, likely).

Once those are tested and verified as "good enough", by then the tech will have grown and can then be expanded to mixed-use roadways. Then it's a matter of attrition until your stated end game is reached. Eventually we and our ICE and manual-drive cars will die. 😁

Depends on what you are teaching but I agree up to a certain degree. Just read the comments on any you tube channel. Many comments go unanswered as they have all mighty cash making view/click!
It’s unrealistic to reply to all questions/comments if the channel is popular (and judging by the quality of typical YouTube comments, not a good use of anyone’s time to comb through). YouTubers who make high quality educational content also typically rely more on donations than views/ads since a lot of they cover can get frequently demonetized.

I spoke too soon. Saw the video and he can definitely discuss it considering the patents are public.

So this is pretty much official now that AR glasses are coming from Apple.
AR glasses are just under development. But AR glasses are a niche product, likely to fail.

People really need to watch the video before commenting, Mark isn't spilling corporate secrets or anything he's simply commenting on a public patent. Everything else he says is pretty vague, from the sound of things Mark didn't even admit to being an employee at Apple until someone discovered his name on that patent.
It is an interesting insight into working at Apple these days, the culture of secrecy has worked for them in terms of marketing but it does seem in danger of turning off some of the most talented people in the business. Going forward I think they are defiantly going to have to find some sort of a compromise because I think there is a bit more bureaucracy in place than back in the days when you had Steve to fast-track decisions. That's if books such as After Steve and some of the reporting over the last 11 years are to be believed.

And he makes pretty good squirrel obstacle courses and great glitter bombs.

Great post, macduke. I'd add he's the creator of the Glitter Bomb which he uses against them dastardly porch pirates.

Not going to take any notice to a guy who can’t even wear his apple mask properly

False recruiting by Apple: Narcissistic traitors and busybodies should never be hired. This jack betrays his former team. I wish he feels legal consequences and no chinese girls.
After all, he covers a strategic project America (not just Apple) tries to maintain its technological edge.

In China, this kinda boy would be immediately in prison.
This is my favorite post on any discussion board ever. Corporate apostate smiting, the high bar of Chinese human rights, withholding prostitutes, the romance of authoritarian gulags, and all over publicly published patent info. 🤩😍🤩

This AR/VR set is one of the least interesting things Rober has been attached to. I'm glad he got out before Apple's famously corrosive atmosphere ground him down like it does everyone else.

Interestingly they mentioned that apple should do a camera or maybe do a printer. These are both products Apple has created and sold in the 90s

Congratulations for not reading the article! 🤦‍♂️

Do you really think that he can answer each and every single one of the tens of thousands of comments he receives on a daily basis?!
VR.

Inside an autonomous car.

On public roads.

With traffic.

Tech companies can’t even release laptops and monitors without glitches.

There isn't a single company out there that's able to completely prevent duds. 🤷‍♂️
Apple better have some ground-breaking innovative applications here, because as it is now I have zero interest in VR.
They do (otherwise, they wouldn't even be creating the product in the first place)!
Workers don't owe corporations their lives
Unless they actually do want to devote their lives to corporations.
executives don't deserve credit for personal accomplishments.
They're human beings like you and me. If they do accomplish something, it's their accomplishment, not anybody else's.
Why do all Youtube preview images have to be so off the charts cringy and ridiculous? It's so off-putting.
To catch the attention of the algorithm?

It's a silly thumbnail. It's not going to hurt you. Sheesh...

Nah, I think it'll stay the way it is forever.

👏👏👏
And those who can't be content creators become anonymous keyboard warriors on  forums.
A terrible fate... :(
…and those who can't even do that really good, they turns into attention seekers.
One thing is for certain! There are a lot of attention seekers here! 🧐
They remind me of tabloid newspaper covers: “Bat Boy meets secretly with Tim Cook to discuss new Mac Pro!”.
Batman works for Apple now? What kind of world do we live in?! 🤣

Okay, do you happen to be Steve Ballmer by any chance?

When the actual product comes out, it'll be much more interesting than you think. :)

I don't see Apple going back into that space. There's a reason why Apple hasn't sold cameras and printers since the 1990s.
Does no one watch the video before commenting? o_O
I know, right? 🤦‍♂️
Plus elephant toothpaste.
And secret lairs! o_O
Yeah. It’s a click bait title of a discussion released over a week ago. Having Mark Rober talking on Waveform is a treat to tech nerds.
Precisely! 👏
Yeah, an autonomous car. By the company that produces Siri. And releases bug-fest software, presumably by a software division with no test teams.
You do realize that the Siri division has nothing to do with the rest of Apple, right? That's how companies work... 🤦‍♂️

After how this thread have developed, I am even more glad I never even heard of this dude before this thread. Haven’t missed anything. Neither have Apple.
He's an amazing engineer who helps kids develop their minds. A person of integrity and very very smart. I can see why you wouldn't get on.
