I'm about to order a case for my MBP, but I'm not sure about which size.

The small one (Model Z3/DZ3):

Internal dimensions: 9.8 x 15.4 x 3

The medium (Model Z5/DZ5):

Internal dimensions: 10.6 x 15.6 x 3

The MBP 15" is
9.6 x 14.1 x 1

I'd like something small and portable but maybe the small is too tight for the MBP and the medium too loose?

I bought one of these cases for my 15" Powerbook G4. It is a very nice case and is extremely sturdy. It does lack extra space on the inside so hauling around a mouse and other stuff can be difficult. My particular case is large enough to hold a 17 " notebook. There is a nice velcro strap on the inside to tighten down whatever size notebook you have and it works very good. I'd go for the bigger case so that you can carry your power extension cord inside too.

The small might be too small. Check the inside case specs, not the outside. If it is possible, try to find one and try them by putting your MBP inside of one.
