zooming icon view in finder doesnt work

I often set the finder to icon view, to have a preview of a photo shoot.

Sometimes, it works, to zoom the icon size (2 finger gesture on mouse pad), sometimes its completely locked out.

I then can only change the icon view in the context menu, which drives me crazy 😡

Whats the catch?
