This just in!

Steve Ballmer, CEO and several unnamed executives at Microsoft have been arrested for suspicion of arson of one of the Research & Development buildings at Apple Headquarters in Cupertino, CA. Detailed plans regarding a theft of software code and "Multi-Touch" hardware were found on Ballmer's handheld device. "I found it kinda weird that he changed the icons and theme on his Motorola Q to look that of an iPhone," Sgt. Fred Harris of Cupertino Police Department stated, "Nevertheless, the planned theft and arson was listed as a scheduled appointment right on his home screen. What a dumbass."

Psh. This is obviously flash-in-the-pan, viral marketing hype for IEEE 1394-2008/FireWire 3200. Apple's always making overzealous claims -- 'FireWire is so hot, it burns the closest competing technology! :p

JK

I'm glad no one was injured. My money's on Dvorak as the suspect.

...

they would have prototype designs and stuff stored on multiple servers at different buildings... right? So that they don't lose a whole lot when one building happens to have something unexpected (like a fire.) So like, they could replace any prototypes they lost in the fire in just a few days, right?

Actually, they were using Time Machine as their backup utility and so they did in fact lose everything :p

Holy cow, calm down people!

I have no idea where or when the R&D reference got thrown in. For all the media knows, every building at Apple is R&D. This building (Valley Green 6) actually has little or nothing to do with the R&D you're talking about. Hardware is all over at the Infinite Loop. VG6 is home primarily to the IS&T department (http://www.apple.com/jobs/us/pro/ist/). They almost certainly have off-site servers and backups, after all they handle all that kind of stuff for Apple, they're not stupid. Please stop the hysterics and crying in your beer about "losing product X". I know this is a rumor site, but seriously, calm down.

you can't be that dumb to put it as an appointment on your phone.. i bet you he stole something much bigger and more important from apple and then showed that he stole something else.:apple:

Steve?

The HVAC units could have overheated if they were trying to cool rooms full of MBP the way some of them heat up when the run or charge, or maybe one of their excellent batteries went up.

In an interview with Information Week, the fire chief/inspectors first say the fire started in the attic of the building, the 2nd floor sufferred heavy water and sprinkler damage, and the roof is gone, a the flames shot through it. And Apple swears it's not an R&D building.
