i didn't have time to read through the whole thread, so sorry if this is a repeat
since i upgraded to 10.3.6, safari STILL has trouble opening about 40% of web sites that i go to. i cant recall what the error message says exactly, but i think it has something to do with "cannot find server". i click OK, then i just have to press enter and safari finds the server and loads the page like it should have the first time.
firefox dosn't have this problem.

I had a problem on an emac, it died half way through installling the update, and I had to cold reboot it. Everything was fine, but the software update wouldn't work. Remedy was to download the full 90MB update from the apple website. Works fine now.

It borked my Mac - now I need help

My 15" G4 1Ghz 1GB RAM Powerbook Panther crashed at 66% of system optimization. (See-through black window telling me to restart). It wouldn't fully boot and stuck at the Window Login startup.

I tried reinstalling OSX and that was ok (looks so dated though!) and tried the Panther upgrade - it didn't take. As the reinstall copied some my files, the hard drive doesn't have enough free space to reinstall.

So I'm stuck.

The computer can't find the OS and displays the Question Mark.
I can't reinstall as the drive is full
And I don't know how to delete some applications to free up hard drive space. I've tried Apple's Online support but no joy.
My friend gave the single-user prompt a go, but couldn't mount the hard drive (he's the tech guy in my flat)

Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
geetoo

Edit: My friend's going to Firewire me to another machine to delete some files. Hopefully the reinstall won't be a problem this time around. Fingers crossed.

Update: Used the Firewire to mount my Powerbook as a drive on my friend's Powerbook (hold down T when booting on Powerbook to be mounted). Deleted some files to make some room for a reinstall. Reinstalled the OS. Backed my files up. Then downloaded the latest software updates - so far it's working ok.

I've been having that problem for about 2 weeks now and I have not yet updated to 10.3.6.

I applied that tip to enable Graphing, Hexadecimal and Expression mode in the calculator, and after the update, they stopped working, and the basic and advanced only show up if i show the paper log.

Already filed a bug...

I had problems with calculator.
1st launch - really super mini version.
2nd launch - scale ok, no scientific button lables.
3rd launch - everything seems normal.

Also had to force Restart after 100% complete install and optimisation.

I installed 10.3.6 and now don't have a Finder. Tried 3 installs with no success. With all applications closed I just have the Dock and a blank desktop. I have to open an application (from the Dock) to get the top menu (blue apple/file/edit/view....etc). Have repaired permissions (twice) and tried to reload 10.3.5 using Pathfinder all with no luck. Annoying as I found Finder quite useful!

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Open up Terminal, and try to run Finder from the command line (this should work if you've got Terminal in your dock). The error message you see should help you find the problem.

Edit: Rather than bore people that have read my other posts on this, here's the symptoms I saw, and how I resolved the problem on my daughter's iBook

I'm starting to think I may hold off on 10.3.6, there seem to be several problems that keep cropping up repeatedly for different people.

My iBook G3 just went black during optimizing so I restarted and the whole screen was flickering so just backed up and did a clean install with the combo updater instead of the patch this time. Seems to be working alright.

My FP iMac froze up about halfway though the optimization process. Rebooted ok. The computer appears to take longer to use coming out of sleep. Also, Safari, which I have NEVER had any difficulties with, seems to run into more wesites that it has difficult with. The only other problem was that I got a iPod Updater message for my 3G iPod. I had already gone through that so tried to exit it, it did not go away, so I though I would do the updater thing. It just froze my iPod and my computer. A reboot for both soved the problem.
Usually I am very cautious about installing updates and wait a week or two. This time I just jumped right in. Kind of regretting it now.

Downloaded and installed the update on my 17" 1.33ghz powerbook, wasn't really watching what was going on, doing emails at the time, and so started up Starry Night Pro (that is a most buggy piece of software) and the whole shooting match just died. Black screen, no nothing. It was at the optimizing hard drive stage, about 70% through. Would then not reboot, stuck on the blue screen with the mouse pointer.

Spent a couple of hours on the phone with apple tech support and they tried lots of stuff I didn't understand booting in different modes and fsck type stuff, but were stumped. we then got to the 'Have you upgraded the RAM' stage. 'Can you remove the module'.

At that point I told them to get stuffed and as they confirmed the HD was OK but the OS was knackered, and booted from a Carbon Copy Clone I'd made two days before. Erased my powerbook drive and restored.

Ran the update again and it's A-OK this time. No Probs. Glad I'd bought the Firewire drive and downloaded CCC two days earlier though!

another gripe is the fact it changes the look fo the LCD color profile. Its darker now and the brushed metal is more brown. I think this happened in .3.5 but I am not sure.

This is a really small complaint, but on my 1.6ghz powermac after taking the computer out of sleep mode there is a brief delay where the screen first goes back to normal but then pauses and goes into the blue loging screen colour for one or two seconds.

The update went OK on my 12" G4 1.33GHz PB, but I noticed after a while I was getting no sound. Even the noise the F5 key makes when you increase the volume wasn't working.

I rebooted the PB and all is well again.

ibook and quicksilver powermac updated just fine with no problems. Both had the small 14MB download. But the new iMac 1.6 was another story. It download all the 34MB file but then sat there with the System Updater saying "Locating harddrive" next to the progress bar. That confused the hell out of me, because it just downloaded it, but can't find the harddrive. ????? It sat there for awhile too, and still couldn't find the drive, like 2 hours. Finally after quiting it and trying a few more times, I just downloaded it from the Apple website and it installed just fine. No problems since.

Delete your system by starting up off a second drive or reformatting and then install from the original install disks.

Ah, ok... from your tone of voice I was expecting something more sophisticated and less radical, he.... sorry for being naive, but thanks.

And in this case I think I'll update as soon as I have made a new clone of my harddrive...

- or what do you think edesignuk? when will you raise the green flag for us? ;)

heh, don't pay any attention to me :)

At the moment, I'm holding off, I'm seeing far to many reports of freezing during the update, and that ain't good. My Mac is workig fine, I don't need the update, so I'll live without it for now.

Yeah, me too :p

There's quite a few people having problems after the update on the Apple Discussion boards, especially with external Firewire drives not re-mounting.

It's been a few days since installing the update and I am noticing a problem. Virtual Memory has not released any of the inactive memory and I'm current at around 64 MB free out of 1.5 GB. System response is still quick but I'm concerned.

A Few Issues

#1 piss me off. Sherlock is broken. Will not even open.

#2 Safari, while i am pleased that this update fixed an akward javascript problem that caused safari to crash, even worse is now safari is unable to login to apache realm protected sites, just hangs and leaves safari unusable, you have to close safari down and then reopen to get it working again. No biggie, firefox 1.0 is good.

I think that both of these issues actually have to do with the webkit frameworks that were updated in 10.3.6 - major problems though.

Westsideguy. Thanks for the info. Sounds like this could be the solution. I found the file (using Pathfinder) but have no idea what a zero length file is or how to tell. Tried to delete the file instead, but can't, even though I changed permissions from Root & Wheel. Also tried a new download of 10.3.6 from the Mac site as you did but still no joy. Might have to reload Panther and start again but I really have better things to do with my time!!

Thanks again for the help.
