Really? Where?

Its there for a reason. It doesnt hurt anything.

It's a necessary evil in case your comptuer locks up. By doing this you don't allow the computer a chance to save prefs and do any system close down cleaning though. This could lead to corrupt data and/or hard drive. One such piece of data that is easily corrupted this way are prefs.

When you shut your computer down this way do the windows you had open previously reopen or do you just get a clean finder with no open windows?

My Powerbook, no problem. Daughter's iBook, muchos problemos.

And to jump to a conclusion on way too little data to warrant it - the people who've reported problems and described their computers seem to frequently be iBook owners.

Hate to be unfriendly but this is a negative feedback thread! K?

I did have one problem with the install - I used the Combo updater (as usual) and started the update. Half-way through I moved to my desk, plugged my Rev C 12" PowerBook in and woke up my Bluetooth Mouse by clicking it. Kernel Panic - Uggh (First one on this machine too!)

Fortunately the system booted fine afterwards (though rather slowly) and a reapplication of the update (with all bluetooth devices firmly off) seems to work OK.

Just a little warning, in case!

Mike

But if everyone is negative then won't that give the impression that this update sucks? My post was in reply to the post that suggested it was ibooks that had problems.
Nothing but negativity gives the wrong impression when in reality it is probably a minority who have the problems.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm on a soap box!

My keyboard & usb bluetooth pluged into the keyboard stoped working after restart (no power). The keyboard is pluged into the usb port on the back of an apple 17" ADC display. After a power down it was fine!

PLEASE POST NEGATIVES ONLY! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS
Okay, it didn't fix my TiBook Airport reception problem. Not really a negative, but I was hoping for a fix.

I wish MacPolls was still being updated. This would be the perfect time for a poll.

I updated my PB yesterday.....no problems. Today I updated my G5 iMac and when it was at 58% optimization(after downloading via Software update) my iMac crashed. A black transparent rectangular window came up stating that I needed to restart my iMac (and it gave directions how to by holding down the power button). The problem is, it will not restart. It is stuck on the grey restart screen (I let it sit there for over an hour already). This is the first time I've really ever had a problem with a software update via Apple. I always repair permissions prior to and after any installations.

Any ideas?

Actually, unless the intent of edesignuk was to give the impression that EVERYONE is having problems, why isn't it okay for lenb to point out he had no problems? :D Although lenb it'd be interesting to know if you've got a G3 or G4 iBook (my daughter's is a G4 1GHz).

The "intent" of edesignuk is for me (and others) to see the kind of problems that people are having, so that we can decide whether to install or not. Without having to root through the massive "official" release threads looking for problems which is a complete nightmare.

It's fairly obvious that there aren't many reports of problems in here, out of all the members here that must have installed it, so I'm getting tempted...but not just yet.

Wow, I wont be updating anytime soon. so many problems. I'll wait to see what happens.

That's the problem with threads like these.. 5-10 people post problems, out of tens of thousands who have downloaded, and so people decide not to download.

I see the fact that only "5-10" have posted problems as a good thing. If this thread was 10 pages long already then I'd be worried.

It's important that people do think of the big picture when reading through a thread like this, but it is useful to see what problems people have, and if the same problems keep coming up.

So far, things are looking pretty good IMO.

It's there so you can get out of abnormal situations, not as an alternative to using the Shut Down... menu option.

onstalled 10.3.6 on my pm g5 dual 2.5 had a kernal panic afterwards....and my ext. hdd's will not mount anymore even after reboots and connect and disconnecting....did the same update on my g4 mdd it seems to be running fine... any one having issues on their mac g5 or g4 external hdd's not mounting after update?

If there were major problems, the update would be pulled. I expect that only happens (e.g. 10.2.8) when they got something wrong with their communication with developers.

I wouldn't normally worry too much about updates. But, as people have pointed out already, threads like this have the habbit of shedding light on the few minor horror stories that may arise, and thus creating the false impression that the update is too risky to install.

Still can't get my Gish and Unreal Tournament 2004 demos to launch now though... :(

Kernel Panic at the end of the install (as reported by others above). I think it occurred during the optimisation stage so no real harm. I plugged in my iPod and it panicked. I think that it might be something to do with hotplugging of devices (bluetooth, firewire or USB) loading 10.3.6 code into a running 10.3.5 system.

Anyway after restart everything seems fine. I might run update-prebindings to ensure that the optimisation was completed...

Optimaztion stalls

I'm sure you get the idea. Any negative feedback on this update please post here :)
Installed 10.36 on my G5 1.6, no problems. It was a 34 meg download. Installed 10.36 on my G4 equipped G3, it was a 14 meg download, the beach ball appeared while "optimising" the install, I had to reboot. The G3 rebooted, I opened up Safari, got on the internet and it crashed. I did repair permissions and the G3 seems to work ok.

How do you do that?

In the terminal type:
sudo update_prebinding -root /

You will obviously need an administrator password for this. It takes a while (but you get regular feedback so you won't think it's crashed). Should probably repair permissions as well...

Calculator broken

I applied that tip to enable Graphing, Hexadecimal and Expression mode in the calculator, and after the update, they stopped working, and the basic and advanced only show up if i show the paper log.

Already filed a bug...
