If iPod flash = no screen

Then headless iMac must = iMac flash
(iHope you don't have to randomly access files)

iPhone flash- simple design 3 buttons volume up/down & Talk, downside it only randomly dials numbers or people from your call-list
(really sux when you need to dial 911)

Actually, I think this would be pretty slick-- that is, if people can get past the whole 'omgz no screen is teh suck!!one!!111!' thing for just a minute.

I have an MP3 deck in my car. When I burn a CD for it, I know exactly what order everything is in; as far as navigation goes, all I need is folder up/down, and track forward/back-- I scarcely even *look* at the display.

So from my standpoint (which also has no desire to carry around even 5GB of my music collection, anyway.), I already figure no display == no big deal. And you figure, with that 240 song figure, you've got about 30% more space than a CD-R? In something the size of a Milano cookie? Complete with standard Apple Sexiness? *That* is freaking sweet.

Anyway. Yeah. And sorry for repeating that 'Milano cookie' thing. Because for some reason that description annoys the hell out of me.

[EDIT:] *And* it'd fit in the '5th pocket' of my pants.. And what if it could sync wirelessly?? And these things would be SO cheap to mfg.

I think I've just decided how to spend the remainder of my Christmas money :)

I still think that what these people saw was not the new iPod (which there very well may be one) but the new iTunes remote control that Steve hinted at a while back when asked about the Airport Express not having a way to control the songs without going over to the computer

That's exactly what I was thinking.

The Next, Next Smaller Cheaper Thing

Jobs is also announcing another revolutionary Apple product - a laptop - with....NO SCREEN!! Yes, you thought it was going to be a headless desktop, but once they realized that the iPod no longer needed a screen it was the logical next step. Laptops for Everyman!

After reading Alan D's biography on Mr. Jobs, I wouldn't be suprised if this exposure was planned to get back the rumor sites...after all, how hard is it to make a banner and flash it for a few seconds. I know it sounds crazy; Steve Jobs is crazy.

I'm not sure what I think about them saying they had pictures of it, but were forced to delete them. I guess only time will tell. Can't wait for tomorrow...

When the time is ripe...

... Jobs and/or Apple get rid of things. When was the last time you felt the need for a floppy drive on your iMac?

Three-buttons and two-buttons mouses existed long before the Macintosh saw the light of day, but they went with a one-button mouse because, at the time, the mouse was something new for the world at large and some measure of education was needed.

I believe that a think tank at Apple has seen the future and has decided to ditch the screen for reasons that are going to be widely obvious in 6 to 12 months.

By the way, when the iPod first came out, I thought it was a horrible name for a product. It reminded me of "The invasion of the body snatchers".

WOW! Think of the extended battery life!

I see plenty of iPods on my college campus. But I also see Cd players as well. What about those people? Are they "saving up" for an iPod? No. A CD player suits their needs just fine. The iPod is not a replacement for a CD player, its expensive... and its for people that have enough music to warrent its purchase. Now maybe this screenless approach will hit with these CD player people. They load their "CD" for the day, and go off... no need for a display. Better yet, they ripped their 10 CD's on iTunes, and let the music ride throughout the day. Cheap, easy, none of this "scroll wheel" complication. An MP3 player for the non-techno masses.

Whether or not this should be considered a part (or will be considered a part) of the iPod family is another matter entirely. Perhaps it should be called the "Shuffle" or something similiar, seperate from the iPod family with a different purpose. Apple wouldn't release something that was not focus grouped, researched, and tested. They are releasing this thing for a reason, they are a corporation and wouldn't release something that they didn't think was viable to a market.

no screen and only 1gb of memory? this thing better not sell for more then 99 bucks. I hate to say this but the Creative Zen people are gonna laugh at this one. I know those zen players suck, but they are agressively catching up to Apple and now this? Seems to me like Apple is getting lazy being at the top.

Except that Creative is charging $200 for their 1GB flash player. So, if Apple comes in at $150 and with the iPod cachet the Creative people may be less than thrilled about this rumor. And with this design Apple has lots of price flexibility, in another year they could easily be sub-$100.

Interesting ...me too. Something just seems wrong with this sort of config for a flash player. It certainly doesn't have that feel of Apple innovation to it.

Wouldn't it be amusing if all of this sturm und drang was over a remote for the Apple Express? :p

At least all of this will be "solved" tomorrow.

WTF are you smoking?

Lightpens where the input device of choice at that time.

Man, I was soooo excited for this about 3 days ago! 150 bucks, smaller ipod, I would prefer 1Gig for working out and stuff...this was like a dream come true for me....

until......
Shuffle? No Screen? WHAT IS THIS CRAP!!
I hate it now...I hate it.........I don't know how many users out there would want an MP3 device and have NO CONTROL over what they hear. The visual aspect of a MP3 device is essential, this is a step backwards.....a large step back. I love apple...I LOVE APPLE, but this is almost laughable and tragic.

Give me a screen on this thing, and I buy 2. :(

Makes sense. Life is random, you should be able to make your music random at the touch of a button.

I just posted the same idea in another thread at almost exactly the same time as you—Great minds think alike! :D

He is correct. I believe Xerox PARC's machine had a 3 button mouse.

2 valid points . . .

1. What if Shuffle is actually the Airport Express remote control, or some sort of remote for iTunes and completely unrelated to the iPod flash?
2. Who said that the iPod flash is even going to be using the name iPod. What if it is just called "Shuffle"? Maybe they don't want to brand a cheaper priced player with the iPod name and thereby degrade the desire for the higher priced, fully functional HD versions.

Why do you need a screen to navigate 200 songs? They will be arranged alphabetically, so you scroll through and find a song if you want to play a particular song. It wouldn't take that long, especially if they have a quick scroll button like the current scroll wheel. I know a lot of people that just set their iPod or iTunes on Random. They obviously like all the songs on it, and when you are working out or not listening to "listen" like you would when you sit down at some nice speakers and equipment(not using an iPod or compressed music), then shuffle is sufficient just to have some beat, and some music. It makes sense, a lot of you that are complaining about no screen probably don't want a flash player that only holds 200 songs anyway. Otherwise, you would see why the random feature is all you really need.

Great Marketing Scheme

Well, some of the best things that make the ipod a success are the clickwheel and the screen.

They could exclude them in the initial "package" (ipod shuffle) and then market the screen and the click wheel as separate accessories that could be added on...

The device is functional without them (playing random songs), and then even better when the components are added on.

The clickwheel could serve the dual purpose of a remote control functionality, and the screen is, well a screen. :)

Doing this would even reduce the basic cost of the player, and go upscale depending on what accessories the buyers wants to add on. apple did mention that 3rd party companies were making more money off the ipod than Apple is after all - this would be a great solution to that.

Apple not the first...but will get the most press

check out this MP3 player by B & O, in fact you will see many similarites between apple design and B & O i.e this television and imac g5.
