......well after reading through MANY threads on the flash iPod, the only people who seem interested in it are people who go to a gym lol.

Call it the gymPod.

I only have classical music on CD's and I dont have that many either, certainly not enough to justify the price of the regular iPod. I was looking forward to seeing this flash iPod - but if the specs rumoured are accurate I dont think it's for me. :(

There is nothing "brilliant" about a mp3 player with no screen. Why the hell should this be marketed towards people who exercise and have no need to select a track? Why isn't this marketed towards people who can't afford a regular/mini iPod or those who are skeptical about spending so much for a mp3 player? If you don't need to look at a screen, fine, play a playlist while you workout. Some of you people would defend anything that Apple does. Do a lot of you have tattoos of the apple logo?

I think its a great idea.

During school I have my iBook with me, so I use that for music. But when I'm not able to use it, (its in my backpack) I still wish I could be playing music. I don't need a full iPod to do that, because I still have all my music with me. I just need something small to play music while I can't get to my iBook.

In my car, my friends and I would use my iBook, hooked up to the stereo, for the music. With a power adapter, battery life isn't a problem.

But for all the other times, I just need something small to play music. An iPod w/ no screen that costs less than $100, would be perfect.

When Apple's competitors come out with a flash player without a screen it's because they can't innovate or it's a bad design. When Apple launches it's own player without a screen, if this rumor pans out, it's "BRILLIANT" ! LOL  I guess there is a fine line between being a fan or a FANATIC.

Some things just take time to get used to, I'm sure people will learn to live without a screen after while, especially if you are a runner/jogger. Do you really need to stop and change songs while you're are running ?
A 240 song limit screams for a custom song list, so the "random part" might work fine.

Let's wait and hear what dear Mr.Jobs has to say.

Well, I for one have about 30 something playlists and I have all of them set to random. If this device can hold more than one playlist that you could easily click through I think it would work just fine. I bet in usability studies Apple discovered that most people are like me and have most of their playlists set to random and only use the screen for navigating the huge library of songs and playlists. I can't imagine that they would release something like this without data to back it up. However, 240 songs seems like a lot for a single playlist. I think if no screen == very long battery life then most people will accept no screen. Imagine all the Apple employees that got one to test. Lucky bastards! ;)

nail. on. head.

ditto - the screen is great for looking for an album, or an artist, or a playlist.

but if you just have one playlist (at a time) you don't really need the screen.

sure, on the face of it "screen" is better than "no screen", but if you stop to think about it, how much do you need the screen for? most flasj players don't really have a screen - a display yes, but not something you can really compare to the functionality of the iPod screen and scroll wheel.

horses for courses, innit?

One playlist only with 240 songs is way too limiting; you'd only have the choice of one fixed order or random. If it supports several playlists with an easy way to choose which one, then they might be on to something.

my next ipod

I think this is a great idea, and it makes tons of sense.

If they're releasing an ipod at $149 it will have no screen. Look at the prices of other mp3 players in that price point. 1gb is a lot for a small player. 149 is cheap, apple is not in the budget electronics market.

For those who say that there's no market for this, I would hardly call the everyone who commutes or exercises small target group.
A screenless ipod with a few playlists and a random feature (I'm positive you would be able to listen to stuff in order if you want to) at the right price point would fill a void, and be unique enough to be mac branded.
I would also say this would become the second ipod for a lot of mac users. I would buy one for running and the commute, (only if I could play stuff in order, so I could listen to audio books).
I would no longer worry about if I'm kicking the crap out of my ipod when I run, and I wouldn't worry about having a $400 ipod in my pocket every time I put my jacket down.
I also have someone at work here who would buy one in a second and use it only on the random function, like his own personal radio station.
It totally fits apple's marketing strategy IMO. It fills a market they weren't in before, and I think the idea of a player that becomes an extension of your itunes playlist with really simple controls is quintessential apple. How hard is it to wrap your head around the idea that, if you want more..buy the ipod mini.
The only reason I could imagine going to flash, would be for shock proofing, size and most importantly, price. Otherwise what were you looking for? A smaller mini? There's no way they would do it for under $200 and even that would be a stretch. If RCA, Sharp, Philips, Creative and whoever else makes it for over $250, do we actually think apples going to jump in the flash market and undercut everyone price-wise? That would be a first.

Hi !

Just 2hours to wait !!!! :)

While I prefer a screen I can understand the logic behind having a screenless flash iPod. With the iTunes integration, it is simple to swap out playlist/songs.

I have already found what I am looking for, so if Apple doesn't deliver the features that I want, then I know what I will get when I purchase my next flash based player. The one that I am looking at includes 2GB of memory, FM radio, record capability and removable AA battery with a projected 50 hour life. The menu system works very well. All that is missing is iTunes integration. And to me, that is an important item if possible.

I love to ski and go on trips regularly during the season. I end up carrying my regular iPod for listening in the vehicle then switch to my flash MP3 player when on the slopes.

I would like to have one device that I can use for both purposes. Meaning different playlists that I can either play in order or randomly.

Fortunately for my needs, iAudio has the G3 (and U2 which is nice as well).

Here's hoping that Apple doesn't disappoint. Only a few more hours and we'll know... Otherwise, my money is going elsewhere.

All i can add to this thread is this:

to all you people that think this flash iPod will only play in shuffle mode, WTF?!?!?!

what if Apple decide to bump up the storage capacity to 2GB(presuming there isn't one already) or hell 10GB in a few years time, and we could then store 480 songs or more on that little device with no screen, who the hell would wanna listen to all those songs with only a shuffle function?

Quite a few people. Or aren't you listening to people? Apple sure is....

food for thought.

Yes, indeed. Are you ready to start eating?

Web site www.ipod-shuffle.com shows an Apple logo above the date January 11 2005.

Yeah, but it was just created yesterday and is registered to someone other than Apple.com, its only been registered for 1 year, etc. I'd be willing to wager this isn't Apple's doing.

Domain Name: IPOD-SHUFFLE.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: NS3.D3NS.COM
Name Server: NS4.D3NS.COM
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 10-jan-2005
Creation Date: 10-jan-2005
Expiration Date: 10-jan-2006

Apple legal hasn't had a chance to shut that place down yet.

Because the people who exercise are a large market. And they tend to have LOTS of money and would be inclined to buy such an item. As opposed to people "who can't afford" a player.

Think about. PLEASE.

I thought it was suspicious when I did a WHOIS search and it showed the entry was less than 24 hours old.

If Apple really cared about the domain they would have gotten it before the name leaked.

"There is nothing "brilliant" about a mp3 player with no screen. Why the hell should this be marketed towards people who exercise and have no need to select a track?"

Beacuse there is a lot of money to made by making a product that people who exercise can use. Who wants to be fiddling for songs when on a treadmill? Who wants to break stride when jogging? Again, the whole point is that you load songs you DONT want to SKIP. You load songs for SPECIFIC purpose and let them play.

"Why isn't this marketed towards people who can't afford a regular/mini iPod or those who are skeptical about spending so much for a mp3 player?"

And why doesn't Ford market a $2,000 car? Not everybody can afford a new or even used car. Apple isnt a charity company. They make high end products that cost a premium. If you can't afford one you save just like people save for a car. If you want a mp3 player with a screen for cheap,Rio is your company. As for being skeptical,no guns here,if the ipod doesnt seem worth it...DONT BUY ONE! Or explore other options. I just got a Apple refurb 15gig ipod for $190. LESS than a 512mb iriver would cost me. Hell, less than a new mini would cost me for that matter.

"If you don't need to look at a screen, fine, play a playlist while you workout."

Exactly the purpose of this player, see, now you are getting it!

"Some of you people would defend anything that Apple does."

Noooooo,it's about looking at the big picture, getting your facts straight and using reason to try and understand why something is or is not.

I would like to see the ipod-shuffle before I trash it all to hell. I am far from an Apple fanboy. Other than a Apple IIc I had as a kid and my ipod(s) I have never owned an Apple product and likely will not any time soon.

Some of you are getting all bent out of shape for no reason. Apple is simply making a product for a specific group and if you are not in that group then dont buy the damn ipod! Creative,Rio,iRiver,Dell and others all make respectable products and surely one fits your needs,at least til apple makes an ipod that can make you happy.

Are you sure?? One more revision?? Please?? Or I guess I could just wait for the real thing at this point...

No way there will be a loose lid like that. Has to be connected somehow. Cool would be if the FireWire popped out like a switchblade VW car-key thingy.

Also, methinks the word "shuffle" will not appear on a button, but the curvy-crossed arrow icon for "shuffle" will label that button.

And why not have the controls on a clickwheel in the same orientation as the regular iPods, with the "shuffle" instead of "menu"? Then the clickwheel could be the volume control, getting people all hooked on the interface for when they are ready to trade up for a deluxe model. :D

Man I should have listened to you and done just one more and we would have got close! With a few more edits and feedback we may have come real close!

Amazing how obvious the interface is now that you see the real thing. How does Apple continue to come up with the most elegant and obvious solution to problems we didn't know we had?

Now where's my credit card...

Wanna know what would seal the deal? (you heard it here first) A little update to iTunes, that will fill this iPod (on connect) with random songs from your entire library.

I believe I called this :)
