Not a joke... Seriously!

I get pins and needles in the tips of my fingers when using the phone, worse particularly when surfing the net. Gets worse as I continue using and eventually disappears when I put phone down. Made me concerned enough to google the problem and see if their was a known issue with the phone. At first I thought I had carpal tunnel syndrome (I'm a doctor)- but noticed it's only when using phone (no matter how I hold it), and I had no problems with 3GS. I think this is a very real concern- can't even use my phone for long period without regular brakes as the pins and needles become unbearable!

It is just static (difference of voltage potential) between you and the phone. There is a slight difference in voltage between ur fingers and the phone's antenna. It's not a big deal. You dont get it on the 3G/3GS iphones because there is no metal exposed. If you ground the phone (touch the antenna to a metal case or something) it will go away.

I get it sometimes on my aluminum macbook pro as well (when it is not plugged in). But as soon as i plug it in, the tingling goes away because the computer is grounded.

If you are wearing a sweater and using the phone, the tingling effect is more likely to happen. But it's not a health concern...

Sometimes, when I drive to work, I have my phone on the seat between my legs. Ive always noticed a tingling in my balls when I put it there. Slightly pleasent sensation, but also slightly worrying.

Saying that I used to get this from previous phones too. Not quite sure whats going on there

OP here is a phone that I think would better suit your needs.......

This just in.....To counter the effects from "tingling," Apple is now selling the iGlove. For those who like to hold the iPhone between their legs, the iJock and iPanty are being developed. Check your stores for availability. Suggested retail, $30.

Shirley you can't be serious.

It's def. Not radiation that is making your fingers tingle. Cell phones hardly emit any radiation.

Medical explanation:

Your on the phone and your body is most likely in a relaxed state, there fore your heart is not pumping blood at a fast rate ie: walking, moving etc. Your arm when you are talking is now moved up holding an object above the level of your heart. Your fingers simply are just getting inadequate blood flow and that's the tingling sensation you feel.

Simply switch ears/hands and put the tingling finger one down by your side and it will stop.

it is more then likely carpal tunnel that is making your fingers tingle,, not radiation

This thread! :D

Geiger Counter - there's an app for that!

I don't know what on earth prompted so many people, including a purported doctor to jump to radiation as a conclusion but I hardly think that's what's going on. Besides, I'm pretty sure there's nothing inside a phone that is going to be leaking ionizing radiation. The good news is, you can't "feel" ionizing radiation anyway.

Sleep tight!

Hey all,

Anyone one else experience this? Using the phone for like 20mins. My thumb and fingers touching the metal band. My finger are felling some what tingling. I can kinda feel the phone broadcasting.

The phone is great for everything else. But is this a concern? Direct contact with the antenna which is broadcasting EM energy at high frequencies. Conducted straight into the fingers.

It might not be a lot of energy but your DNA/cell components are not very big and I bet compared to energy vs size the power is pretty decent.

Before people say other phones are like this. You don't directly touch the metal antenna. Old cell phones were covered in plastic. And EM energy dissipates exponentially with distance.

HELLO! YES I AM and it's not painful but disconcerting. my finger tip vibrates while I text and afterwards for several minutes. Why is that?

I disagree. more like magnetic waves

I think you have a reason to be concerned. Folks who say condescending remarks aren't taking you serious.

1) the magnetic/radiation force is negligible
2) the symptoms are from nerve impingement (e.g carpal tunnel syndrome)
3) this is a 2 year old thread - seriously???? ;)

To the Dragger of Old Threads: You posted this issue in another 2-year old thread tonite in another MR forum, too. It's generally not a good idea to drag old threads up out of the mire. None of the original participants are likely around to rejoin any conversation and the facts (not to mention the iPhone models themselves) have almost certainly changed.

In the future, start a new thread. :)

I've also experienced this when I keep my phone on my lap.

I should note that only the top and bottom function as antennas. The 'antennaband' on the left and right (between the seams) is there just for decoration.

As an engineer I can say with certainty that you don't know what you're talking about.

The tingling you feel is lack of blood from holding your phone for so long or it's texture or temperature most likely.

Cell phones produce non-ionizing radiation, meaning it cannot have any effect on your cells or DNA whatsoever because it has no effect on atoms. So your bet was wrong.

The only health concerns with the radiation from cellphones is that it causes your cells to heat up in small areas. Which may disrupt their cellular functions.

The point is that it would literally be impossible to have any tingling like feeling from holding a cellphone.

The iphone 5 does put more radiation than almost any other phone into the body, about 4 times more but it is still well under the limit agreed by doctors to have noneffect whatosever.

Hope that helps.

BWAHAHAHAHA! I know I said that you should've started a new thread because this one is so old, but I just read thru the entire thread and LOLd quite a few times. :D

This thread began when the iPhone 4 was released and all of the nonsense about the new antenna/bumpers was in full rage. Har. :p
