What apple needs is a 5 to 5.5" phone with 2272x1280 screen in addition to the regular 4" 1136x640 phone. This way the large screen market is served without pushing them to android.

For once in my life, I have to side with Gizmodo. I honestly wanted this to be a great phone that would compete with every other phone in every way. But the only "features" that I see as a real improvement is the speed bump, which users won't directly experience (at least the average consumer), and the screen....maybe (I have been terribly unsatisfied with samsung's screens in the past. too dim, too much amoled and pentile, and in many cases the screen reproduces colors very very poorly). I'm sure it will sell millions, but I feel like it's samsung's way of refilling their "Flagship Superphone" position.

And the presentation was atrocious. It had the potential to be good.....but they got it all wrong, and i found it very annoying.

And people call this innovation? When Apple releases a phone with new features its dubbed mediocre but now all of a sudden a little bigger screen, Siri like voice feature and one additional feature with spec bumps and it's "WOAH, the next big thing".

ONE additional feature?

Are you reading the same feature list that I am?

No Innovation here

Apple is going to have to really innovate with the next iPhone to compete with these impressive Android devices.

People throw the word innovation around far too loosely. This a 5 inch screen and hardware that's readily available is not innovation. It's not a knock at all, it's just the reality of it.

Now, i firmly agree that Apple is over due for an OS change up. iOS, although still fantastic, is now being perceived as dated by some. Maybe it is time to update iOS's approach in some ways.

Hey folks, can we all recall that the iPhone 5 launched on September 21. And the GS4 is coming sometime in April nearly 7 months later.

Apple could whip out a 5" phone in about a month if they wanted to. And while the GS4 will sell and might even outsell the 5 next quarter. It is going to have to compete with the 5S fairly soon. And possibly with the rumored iPhone Plus.

Apple is hanging on to the smartphone market by a thread, a name, and an IOS. Sorry, but the hardware on this is WAY better than the iPhone 5. Apple is "stuck on thin" and its beyond annoying. They are destroying their mac lines slowly and I suspect the next iPhone will look very similar to the last iPhone. Seriously, who will buy an iPhone 5s that looks like an iPhone 5? If not for IOS, I would be on the galaxy.

Who would buy an iPhone5s? How about anyone with an iPhone 4, 4s, or gasp perhaps even a 3s. There are some people not so spoiled that they run out every year just to upgrade a phone. It is just a phone - get some perspective.

Others have already stated why the hardware is in fact not "WAY" better than the iPhone 5. You can read their posts for further discussion but ultimately if you're unsatisfied just buy a Samasung.

Personally I'm not interested in 5inch screens, crappy casings, and gimmicks (my phone has a picture of VD - I touch yours - NOW you have it!). I'll go for something slim, that can fit in the average sized pocket, made from the best materials, running the best OS.

I want palm's graffiti on my iphone.

I have seen apps out there that do handwriting recognition. I dont miss the Palm system at all. I was quite proficient at it but regular old handwriting is the way to go if you're into that thing. BTW styluses for the iPad work great on the iPhone. I personally use a Bamboo stylus. Smooth.

I saw the live stream. I wonder why Samsung had to hire actors to present their flagship phone to the world. I saw nothing that would make me want to leave Apple's ecosystem.

Show me a reference to where java garbage collection can be controlled by the developer. It can't be. System.gc() can be called, but this is just a REQUEST to the Java JVM to run garbage collection 'when it can'.

I don't take issue with technical differences. Yes, Android uses an interpreter which adds a layer of abstraction iOS doesn't have to deal with. And it's true that up until 4.1 Android there was a noticeable difference in response, but that isn't the case anymore.

Google has tuned Android to be just as fast and responsive as iOS. As I said before, my Nexus 7 is actually a tad more responsive than my iPhone 5. GPU acceleration, triple-buffered video...other voodoo, whatever, it's not an issue anymore.

Today's unveiling by Samsung shows why it is easy for them to play catch up by copying Apple, but given a crack at real innovation, they don't have the goods.

Apple, with their ~150 billion war chest, plays the long game. It has served them well, and will continue to do so. My money is still on this horse:

:apple:

Apple should try to exit the smart phone business and save some face while they still have some pride.

No way can they withstand the assault that Samsung is going to provide with their ever more impressive innovations.

The iPhone survived so long thanks to gimmicks, but its not getting it done anymore. Apple will be smart to enter some other market segment like smart watches.

What in hell ever happened to voting down the posts? Big mistake MR. Big Mistake.

Galaxy 3s looks like.

True, although to be fair, the iPhone 4S got the same knock, and it is STILL the second best selling smartphone. I think the S4 will sell well. Whether it causes Apple to rethink anything for iOS 7 I'm less sure. The Verge wrote that Samsung seems to be copying the tick/tock cycle that Apple uses for the iPhone.

I'm one of those people who feels the time is right for Apple to just go with the flow in this one trend. And that screen resolution would be absolutely insane for a phone. Not a bad thing, but that would be a 474-521 ppi screen. As i said. not bad by any means.

Less than one useful feature. Honestly, everything on that list sounds like annoying bloat that would get in the way of smooth operation. If my finger is hovering over the screen, I don't want my phone doing stuff like switching tabs. If I glance away from a video, I don't want it to abruptly stop playing. Ugh, ugh, ugh. These aren't features, they're stupid gimmicks.

the screen is the only thing i like about these phones.

No way. 5" is no good for 2013 - it should be at least 7". At only 5" it's almost not even a tablet - it's more like some overgrown Frankenbeast phone that can't fit anyone's pockets.

You don't need iTunes or a PC to use an iPad and iPhone. You haven't since iOS 5.

We're talking India or China. Chances are there will be a lot of content that they want that isn't in Apple's store. I don't believe that you can add something to an iPhone that isn't iTunes music without a PC, right?

Now get fancier. I like zefrank, and he just put a song on Youtube called 'Tough Love', which is pretty funny. How will our Indian or Chinese person download and rip the MP3 from their iPhone or iPad and add it to their library? He hasn't put it up for sale anywhere, not even iTunes.

Sorry for the bit of a rant, but it is pretty hard to do a lot of things on an iPhone, especially when it comes to acquiring, converting, and editing content. For a low income user, it could be all they have, and it simply isn't as versatile software-wise (this is not including JB stuff, because a computer is needed for that).

Goodbye apple

I really, really like apple and especially ipads but this makes the iphone seem a generation old. Apple just works well but my rows of icons is getting very very old in comparison to this. Still I think this will push apple to step up its game for the iphone 5s/6. Good for both android and apple...

Ok fine! Air Gestures, and new camera modes. But you get what I mean. Although I'm not trying to bash Samsung as it does seem pretty interesting - if Apple did this it would be a mediocre update. I guess because of the name "Apple" people expect every update to be a major innovation which is not realistic.

Eh - who cares who's talking. They had Samsung reps there.

I thought this was a much better preso then Sony's for the PS4

wonder how Phil feels about it shipping with Android 4.2.2, lol

Well, I would HOPE the newest flagship would at least ship with the latest OS. The question is whether any of the goodies will make it down to the S3. People criticized Apple for not bringing Siri to the iPhone 4. Well, will Samsung bring Smart Scroll to the Galaxy S3? I don't see why they couldn't? It's mostly driven by the accelerometer.
