During its September iPhone media event, Apple announced that anyone who purchased an eligible new iOS device after September 1 would be able to download iPhoto, iMovie, and the iWork suite of apps (Keynote, Pages, and Numbers) for free. Apple today began sending out emails with iTunes credits to users who purchased both new iOS devices and one or more of the now-free iOS apps prior to its September 10 announcement.

Eligible users appear to be receiving credit based on the number of apps they purchased, and the credit can be used towards the purchase of any content in the iTunes Store, including books, apps, and music.

Pages, Numbers and Keynote are normally $9.99 each in the App Store, while iMovie and iPhoto are priced at $4.99 each, which is a total savings of approximately $40 for customers who purchase a new Apple device.

Thanks Tim!

I bought Pages on August 30....... Just sent apple a "report problem" from my account! Hopefully they are nice:)

I got an iPod touch 5 last year. In the beginning of September i purchased iPhoto and when I was double checking what my iTunes credit was a couple of days after the September 10th announcement, i discovered that my balance was back up to what it was before I had purchased iPhoto.

I don't tend to start threads about this stuff though.

It'd be nice if Apple can release details about the new iWork for OS X that they announced at WWDC.

iWork and the like are still $9.99 in App Store for me in iOS 7. Why?

Presumably because the discount applies only to first-time activations of qualifying new hardware purchases, or at least that is how I understand it.

If you have an iPhone 5 more than a month or so old, then it does not qualify, as it has already been purchased and activated before this announcement.

No but I just bought the 5c this week. Mind you, off topic I did the beta thing on my 4s all summer but I finally got the 5c this week. So idk.

Maybe they will credit your account in a few days/weeks? Idk either!

You could try emailing iTunes support to see what their procedures are and what you need to do to qualify.

I wonder if setting up your new iPhone as a "new" iPhone makes a difference? I setup my 5S as a new iPhone instead of setting up from a backup of my previous iPhone's backup and I was presented with a screen offering free download of the iWork apps. Had I not gone that route, I wonder if I would not have seen that screen?

it probably does. i backed up and then changed the name because i have so many settings etc

I wonder what the chances are that they'll include the iWork suite for free with OSX, when the MacPro, MacBookPro and Mini are released alongside Mavericks. Or even slash it in half to $9.99 for each of the three iWork Apps?

True, it's not quite as powerful as MS Office, but for many, it's sufficient for their day-to-day needs.

This pisses me off. First iCloud is free. Now this. Way to screw over loyal/paying customers. At least give us extra storage or something

I had a similar issue, but was able to rectify it. Although when searching for the apps it asked me to pay, if I navigated to them using the path:

Featured -> Scroll down to "New to the App Store" -> Scroll down to "Apps Made by Apple"

I was then able to download them for free. In theory it shouldn't make a difference, but it did work for me.

Thank you, sir. Will try it in a few.

Makes now difference. It's a new device activation either way.

First iCloud is free.
I'm not sure what that means. The first 5GB has always been free with iCloud.

Where I'm disappointed with iCloud is I own several iDevices and 5GB isn't always enough for backups when you have more than one device. If they're worried about people stacking older unused devices to get more storage, then just give us an extra 5GB a year for 3 years with each device (that's reasonable).

How is this "screwing" you over? You've had this app for however long since you purchased it. If you'd waited until now, you'd never have had it all that time.

I've purchased all these apps myself, I think I've used pages once and numbers never. But that's fine, I chose to buy it. I'd be bummed if I got them all in the last few months but I've bought them here and there over the last few years (caved for Numbers this summer). Apple's not screwing me over by giving it away now.

It's more likely Apple's committing to getting everyone using this product and will continue to develop it. They're going to look pretty bad if they get everyone hooked and discontinue the product. They've done that occasionally (and so has other companies) and generally they end up not looking good.
