I purchased iMovie on my iPhone on 9/3, but I haven't received an email... Any ideas? Am I suppose to fill something out?

iWork and the like are still $9.99 in App Store for me in iOS 7. Why?

Try are only free for NEW devices purchased after Sept. I'd assume if you have multiple devices it would only be free if you actually purchase from the newest device... Interesting corner case if you buy a new 5C now, would you also get them free on an older device?

Indeed. I was able to find them searching the app store as the gentleman said before, I just upgraded from the 4s to this phone, I 'get' it, and am an avid user of apple and got the answer, so Please stop flaming me. Thank you.

If you are having trouble getting the iWork and iLife apps for free on your eligible device (activated after sept 1, 13), try this it worked for me. http://steves-studio.blogspot.ca/2013/10/iwork-ilife-apps-free-with-device.html?m=0

A date which isn't a qualifier. Not to mention it's not about when you bought the apps so much as when you bought your device. Buying an app even during Sept from a device activated before Sept doesn't count. Both have to be within the month.

So you aren't likely to get anything more than an email saying that there is no problem at all because you don't qualify. Course they won't phrase it that way. They will just send you an email with the terms for getting the apps for free.

I bought my iPad on the 30th as well. Bought pages the night I got home.

And?

You bought your device before the cut off, so don't expect anything.

Truth is that Apple didn't have to roll the date back. They could have said it was only for iPhone 5s and 5c and future devices. But they did it to be nice, score a few PR points etc.

But if you don't meet the rules you don't meet the rules. If by some weird fluke you can get them for free etc be happy for the fluke. If there is no fluke, well you didn't qualify anyway.

I'm not sure what that means. Where I'm disappointed with iCloud is I own several iDevices and 5GB isn't always enough for backups when you have more than one device.

So...back up to your computer instead?

This is a post-PC world*, I'm not supposed to need a computer.

iCloud is supposed to do my backups: for some weird reason they give me the same amount of space if I have one device or two (I've paid more for the two!) or if I have a 16GB model or a 64GB model (I've paid $200 more for the 64GB model).

I used to be happy to give my money to Apple for more storage, they called it iDisk. But now I can't store files (of my choosing) in the iCloud, and this is why we have services like DropBox (to store my files, of any type).

* For those of you that don't recall the "post-PC world" is a statement from Apple. Can't remember if that was one of the iPad keynotes but I think so.

I agree. Apple need to stop making each iCloud account = 5GB.

1. They should do what Gmail does, each year you have an iCloud account with iOS devices, you get 1GB free per device or something like that.
2. Bump to 10GB by default for the free plan.
3. Increase the iCloud storage for each device. So, if I own an iPad and iPhone, that should bump the iCloud storage to 20GB for free and I get 2GB free each year.
4. Fully implement the iCloud system in OS X. Right now, you can store files in ~/Library/Mobile Documents and it'll sync to other Macs via iCloud. They need to start making it integrated as iCloud like Windows 8's Skydrive integration, not Dropbox.

5GB is not that bad, but it doesn't work when you have to backup both an iPhone and an iPad.

iCloud is a terrible service other than for backups, and I shouldn't have to buy a premium plan just to be able to get the most basic backup functionality out of it for my two devices.

And don't say "backup to your computer". iTunes is still one of the worst pieces of software ever made and I avoid using it like the plague. Also, I have an SSD and I don't want to waste 20GB of space on it just to synch my iOS device applications and backups.

If you use icloud just for backing up then create separate iclouds for each device.

Or, upgrade your icloud. Why does everybody expect everything to be free?

iCloud backup is not just for backing up. It's also for sharing documents and settings between devices.

I don't think everybody's expecting it to be free, they're just expecting Apple to increase the storage slightly ever year as storage and bandwidth costs continue to decline every year. Apple won't pay more to increase this, so people are naturally expecting Apple to simply keep up the same profit ratio.

The point is they want you to spend more, not keep improving what is free. And what profit ratio is there when its free? With iWork now available via browser they are hoping to increase everyone's dependency and usage.

Yes, and how do they get people to spend more? By providing more value on the free stuff in the first place. That's how some businesses usually work.

An example would be some businesses providing free excellent customer service which ends up earning them more money because customers like idea of the free service and would be more interested to invest in the company even though the staffing costs is huge.

It's getting cheaper every year to get more storage and to pay for more bandwidth. So Apple can take advantage of this and offset the costs by including a bonus for the customers.

They're never going to get every single iOS user to pay more but they can get more money back by getting a small population to pay for it. Many businesses survive on a small % of population that pays for the expensive plans and survive without ads being offered to the rest of the free service. Imgur is one of them (granted, they have some ads but not that annoying), they're offset by the huge hosting services that the parent company owns.

I'd totally pay for 50$ a year for iCloud plan if it includes a free 1GB increase every year and I'd be more encouraged to stay with Apple longer. But with only a fixed 20GB for $40 per year and I'm generating more stuff each year, I'm forced to use Dropbox, SkyDrive and so on, while only using 5GB plan to only store backups and nothing else. Each app I use, I look for other sync services and not iCloud.

Yep they gave iwork for free online and on new devices.

This is a foolish statement.20GB/$40 = $2/GB. You are willing to pay $50 if they increase it by 1GB a year. It'll take 5 years before you are breaking even. I guarantee apple will up their storage plans as time goes on. I don't think they are ever going to tally the storage daily like google. Or even deal with 1GB increments. Apple will wait till the numbers are nice and round and make the new offerings. ie. 40GB/$40. They are also looking at average storage use. If their average customer needs 4.9GB. They are going to look at how to bump that average so the average customer is paying. If .01% of customers need 60GB, they aren't too concerned.

Finally, dropbox is 2GB free. Apple is 5GB free. And they have been that way for several years.

Wow, I missed the memo on that!

I've just been using DropBox etc, but that'll work for larger files even better!
You're saying I can just stick stuff in there and it'll sync?

How is it foolish? That's the exactly the point of doing this, they earn more by doing this rather than doing 40GB bump that nobody knows if it will ever come. People usually never do the maths but if they see the bonus of increasing the 1GB per year, they'd like the value they get even though it's better for them to make Apple do 40GB/40$.

Apple can also market it well "Taking more photos each year? No worries, Apple have your back, you get an additional 1GB free each year".

Beside, folks can always just create separate iCloud accounts to get 5GB free if they're smart about it. This is not what Apple want people to do.

Yes, problem is that you can only use it for Macs. iOS won't really work like this.

Well, Mr Righteous, how do you want me to show you the confirmation email from Apple refunding me my money for Pages and providing me codes for Keynote and Numbers...
