Got my PB, love it, but it does have the horizontal line problem, and I will be taking it back next week more than likely.

Very disappointing. It's not a pain in normal activities, but when I'm doing graphics and flash zoomed in for some of the projects I work on, I know it will be a pain.

:-( Such a nice piece of hardware and such a wonderful day, partly ruined thanks to poor Apple quality assurance.

For what it's worth, I've had my new 15" PB for 2 weeks on Monday, and I have no problems with the screen...
It does sort of agravate my eyes after too much use, but I've been stuck at 1024x768 for the past 4 years or so... so maybe that's just it...

Sorry to hear that about your PowerBook motherduce. Could you take a pic of the screen? I'm curious as to what this horizontal line problem with the screen is.

Bad luck m8. Mine is still in transit, I'll post when it arrives. Whats the serial number so we can work out the manafacturing week.

I did take some, and will try again tonight, because I'll be gone all day for a rugby match.

The first batch weren't clear enough to see the difference in the ESPN logo test.

High pitched whining?

I've had my PB for a week now, and I love it dearly. However, have any of you noticed a high pitched whine emitting periodically from your PB? Maybe I'm just used to my 12" PB being as quiet as socially awkward silence, but it's definitely noticeable (though my partner swears he can't hear anything). I'm not electronically-savvy enough to know if it's the HD or what.

I haven't heard anything from my 15".

On another note, the WiFi reception on mine is also better than what I've read from other users. I took it to the guest house in an inner room and up in the loft and both cases, I got no lower than three bars and it's a prety good distance from the WAP (sorry, I don't have the footage to give an idea of the range). All good so far.

I agree. My neighbor and I share a wireless connection (I don't have an idea if the footage), but I do know that where I used to only get 2 bars on my 12" Rev B, I now get at least 3!

I stlll can't get wireless in my bedroom, where my s/o can get a connection on his Dell. But seriously, who wants a Dell?

I am pleased with my PB overall except for the screen, which is a huge deal. But some early perceptions:

wireless connectivity is awesome for me, whether I'm in the office, bed, living room, or on my deck, I've had 4 or 5 bars with my LinkSys Wireless-G Router - WOOHOO.

Speed - even with only 512MB RAM (ordering more after I confirm that I will be keeping my PB), it flies with most apps.

Aesthetics - sitting on my newly cleaned desk on an iCurve with a PowerMate beside it with it's white light beckoning me...it's a beautiful thing!

---

Overall, I'm still getting used to being back in the OS for the first time in over a decade, but I am loving my book and I just hope Apple decides to fix the screen issues so I can keep my new love!

This afternoon I will be posting the pictures of it's birth in a thread somewhere....using iPhoto for the first time.

Awesome. Glad to hear you're keeping it. OS X is a large bump up for OS 9 or even OS 8. Mac OS X Tiger has soooo many beautiful and graphical new features. It's endless to find out what you do and don't have on it. I just found someone down here in Mesquite that wants to buy an iBook for video editing and that. Although, it would probably be better to get a PB for that, the iBook should suit him just fine. Apple's doing a great job with the market-share booming. Like when I went to go get my iBook - 1 they were running out of Macs. 2 A lot more people were there getting Macs and looking at them. 3 They're easier, better (standards wise), and come with all the software I'm still looking for (functionally wise) in Windows - that is free btw. iCal is a major one. I use it a lot. AppleWorks 6 isn't as great as Pages, but it works for what I use it for. Safari is a safe, fast, and awesome web browser. iTunes comes up-to-date on some of them. Automator helps get tons of tasks done. Widgets are beautiful + with the graphical appeal of the "water" effect that you get from dropping them on makes it worth the graphical appeal. OpenGL (largely used in Unix, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Linux, etc.) is supported largely - thats the basis for all the graphics - so in turn it speeds up tons and tons of applications that are ported - from OpenGL - to here. With the exception of Doom 3 which I don't think was optimized (code wise via GL lists or that like it should have been) at all. Overall Mac's are the best. I love my iBook and people are still in awe about it.

jamie85 -> Did u get it resolved.

My Powerbook is gonna spend the weekend in a TNT depot in somewhere in England.

Looks like it will make Scotland on Monday - why can't the move it over the weekend?

The delivery guy came back a few hours later with my PB, I told him the other parcel was supposed to go to a completely different street - he was very confused and could hardly read the mailing labels! :( I think the moral of the story is.. don't ever use TNT.

I'm typing this reply on it now. It's gorgeous, no lines or flickering, it's perfect in every way. :D I'll post some pics soon.. Did you get yours today?

Does your serial number start with "W8"? I've read in the "Horizontal lines" thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/158751/) that this corresponds to where the unit was assembled and everyone who has had the issue (myself included) had a serial number beginning with "W8".

Yeah, I'll be checking that tonight when I get home to see if it's a W8 - I forgot to check on that this weekend. I definitely have the line issue though, and will be getting a full refund on this product if Apple doesn't release a fix in the next week.

My serial number starts with W85, maybe they've fixed the problem? This was shipped on 01/11/2005.
Mine starts with W85 as well. What does the serial number correspond to as far as manufacturing location?

BTW, I understand the concern with the bad LCDs considering the amount of money you're putting into it. Just a suggestion to a lot of of future buyers out there. Be aware of the situation, but don't read through every single post and thread regarding it. It'll drive you insane. You'll either hold yourself back from a purchase, or sticking your nose to the screen to make out any sort of imperfection. Take a look at the screen you have and if it isn't a noticeable flaw to you, then great.

Oh, btw, all new PBs have this fit problem with the gray trim on the outside of the cases. It tends to bow out in corners. Just look closely. Keep looking. You'll see it. ;)

Sorry I've got no idea about which part of the serial number corresponds to a location and what locations they are..

In another thread someone said that W8 is used for the Shanghai location. I don't know of anything official (from Apple) to verify this.

It arrived @ lunchtime - I have 'the lines':(
Spent 1:30 hours on the phone to Apple Care tonight.

Will post when I have more info. Expecting a callback from Apple 1st thing tomorrow

Shipping was incredibly quick, though. I placed the order late Tuesday night and now it's here. I guess being in Indy (FedEx hub) finally has its perks.

Being the hub, do they keep outside stuff for much longer??? :)
Mine is lying there for more than one day..atleast fedex shows that.
what the hec...should have ordered next day shipping....

chill.....

My PB was BTO and so was manufactured in Shanghai. Duh, ignore the above post from me.. I think my brain must have switched off earlier.

Spoke to Apple this morning.
I have rejected the one that arrived yesterday, and they are sending me a new one.

Its should be being built as a type, but will not be shipped until Apple recieve the old (19 hours old) one back

So back to another 12 day wait and fingers crossed.

Well, I'm not sure of FedEx policies, but they might wait for their planes to fill up before sending the shipments out. Just makes more sense that way.

I hate to hear that. Stay optimistic, I'm sure it will get resolved quickly.:)

The only way it can get resolved is...
1) He sells the PB and buys a PC laptop
2) His laptop case gets snitched while he is in the transit
3) One fine day in a downtown cafe, he stands up, accidentally tips the table over, and the laptop smashes into a thousand pieces.

I've spent so much time on the phone lately I am not *even going to bother* anymore, I will probably live longer if I just sell it off on ebay instead of continuing to deal with those scumbags.
