Is the user log-in loading bar just for the beta? Will this disappear? It shouldn't take that long to load a user profile with an SSD.

No, it's not just semantics. Betas are pre-release versions, which means that some functionality may not be present. GMC is essentially the final version and will be released pending QA. If bugs are found that are deemed critical (or whatever) then a new GMC gets released. I've worked at several companies that followed this process.

Beta is pre release but not because functionality is missing but rather because bugs are present. It's supposed to be feature complete.

If you're suggesting that beta is for internal bug testing and gmc is for public testing, then apple is not following that because they released public betas.

As such Apple has taken the traditional role of beta and blurred it into gmc. To them gmc just seems to mean "we're a little more confident this beta is ready to go but we're still not sure. But we want you to get more excited. "

Hopefully this fixes the bug with thunderbolt dock usb controller when waking from sleep introduced in GMC

I also get the bug of the computer renaming itself with number iterations

Running PB5 on a Mid 2009 MBP 13" with 8gb RAM and a standard HDD. It flies! Loving it so far although getting used to the iOS'ish styling/theming is taking a bit. No found bugs yet. No noticeable lag. Monitoring battery usage closely.

Have they fixed the Finder preferences bug yet, for ****'s sake?

9 DPs and 3GMs ... you'd think someone would have noticed that Finder preferences are inaccessible.

Running Beta 5, and while some of the interface changes are taking some getting used to, I am really liking it so far. Being able to answer my phone from my iMac is very cool, although the person I was talking to said the audio was kind of muffled.

Golden Master candidate 3.0, but it's effectively the second candidate from a full installation perspective.

(GM Candidate 2.0 testing was limited – 2.0 was a delta that required the first candidate. Better to test a full installer.)

Correction: as far as I know, there's no full installer for Golden Master candidate 3.0.

I'm not seeing this icon in my Dock. Did you change any settings on your Mac?

Nope. It appears when I am using Safari on an iDevice, and disappears when I stop.

The only setting I changed (when I first installed the beta) is the Handoff setting under General in Settings.

Trash your com.apple.Finder.plist file, log out and in again, might help, but, all Finder setting are reset!

Newbies

Thank you all for sharing all the bugs still not fixed.

I'll wait for 10.10.1 (maybe 10.10.2) for a clean installation on my Retina MacBook Pro 13".

i use this as a primary system now, and beside the laggy animations, i'm not experiencing anything. i reinstalled it completely (clean install) when the 1st GM Candidate came out.
so my advice for whom experiencing weird issues to do a clean install.

Clean install for what, OS X does not need to be reinstalled, well almost never, you can almost always fix problems in OS X.
Just an example what to do if there are problems, create a new account, log out and into the new account, problem gone then it's your normal user account which causes the problem and can always be fixed without a reinstall.

I think it may just be you... I don't have those black corners.

Read the whole damn thread before you post, it's been said many times it only occurs when the "reduce transparency" box is checked in Accessibility!

Wow, I do not have Yosemite yet and was looking forward to it. After reading this thread I think I'll hold off for a while when it is released.

Why ?

You know GlenK, most here are just a smitten of the millions that will have it, and not go banana's over some trivial stuff that is now being posted. These are fanatics that have not seen the outdoors for a good while. :D And when they read my post here they will jump on me as if they think what they are arguing over is important and I don't have a clue.. Sad.. Real sad

1. transparency rant

2. Name of OS should be rant

3. Thin fonts rant

4. What does GM actually stand for rant

5. Etc, etc

this update keeps logging me out, anyone know has this problem as well?

unfortunately not man i know how frustrating when it seems like the update just ****ed up your cpu can be. But IMHO first I'm an iOS dev don't do much dev for OS X--how ever the nerd in me always beta cycles---and IMHO as basically a third party perspective; a user; a voyuer from the cloud; this has been one of the smoothest OS X betas i've gone thru with Apple. Literally not one update has messed with anything basic things like Safari have never crashed, the only thing that did was back in DP2 and that was the Game Center; Apple responded to me quickly and DP3 it was fixed. Idk i love it; i look at 10.9 on my father and wifes computers and they look like they are stuck back in time; either that or I'm too far in the future :apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::p

----------

I was about to post the same thing. This is not a game changing bug! Hence why it's probably not getting fixed.

no in fact its quite the opposite APPLE realllllly wants us to use transparency (obviously) soooooooo why would they fix it? hahahah but for real.

Continuity and handoff now work flawlessly for me. As soon as I open up Safari on my iPhone, I see the icon on my Mac's dock. As soon as I close Safari or put the phone to sleep, the icon disappears. Also, SMS messaging is back for me.

Edit: Also, there appears to be icons in the top right corder of the Safari icon for Handoff depending upon if you're using an iPhone or an iPad.

Image

those icons have been there since at least dp 8. handoff has never not worked for me. only SMS messaging and phone calls. Apps have always been able to handoff for me. And those icons were added a while ago because i have definitely pointed them out to my wife who is completely annoyed with me at this point (after iOS 8 beta and now w/ OS X lmmao)

on your OS X Yosemite device;

settings---->general----->check allow handoff

----------

ugh.. really looking forwards to a new public beta.
Also, and i know this has nothing to do with this thread, but can anyone tell me what the 'location' option is for?
I don't think that's always been there, or has it?

hmmm don't have that option (I'm on GM candidate 3)

And lastly one more bug Apple hasn't fixed...

THE FEEDBACK ASSISTANT itself knocks out your internet while collecting data, at least on Comcast Xfinity internet. I don't know why or how, but I have to reboot my router/modem after each Feedback report.

I use Comcast Xfinity and have never had this problem.

Make a small 20GB partition. Install Yosemite on the partition and test. If the problems go away with connecting you know it's your install.

I've never understood why the filename for the disk utility icon in launchpad has always been wonky (ie not centred)

Is it so difficult to centre it?

It doesn't bother me, it's more amusing than anything else.

Why ?

This 100x. If people started threads about how great everything was working or how much they loved something the internet would crash. Fortunately the moaners are a (albeit vocal) minority.

When I worked at this little software company in Redmond, "gold master" meant something different. Testing wad done and the GM was the actual imagine that wad going to be replicated a gazillion times. Of course that lets you know how long ago that was.

Did they have a spell checker at this bygone boutique?

It is centered, it's just that the eye tries to center it on the hard drive icon, but the actual image area the text is centered to extends to the edge of the stethoscope.

Now lets have a big fight about it! Just to keep in the spirit of the thread of course....

Can someone answer a simple question please?

If I install the newest GM candidate public release on my main working machine, what happens if a new candidate version is released? Can I just update it the same as a 10.x.x update? Or do I need to do a whole new install again?

Secondly, once the final version is released on the 16th, can the candidate version be updated or will I need to do a whole fresh install?

Thanks.

I assume that you are not a developer.
1. GM candidate is not a public release: it is for developers. However, you can install new GM candidate version (as if there would be any :)) over current one.
2. Candidate version can be updated to a final version but not through App Store. You can download final version from other sources (as you did with GM version) and install it over your GM. However, Public beta users will have an opportunity to install final version through App Store since it is linked to their Apple ID.
Verdict: do a fresh install of official release, so that Yosemite will be linked to your Apple ID.

Thank you. I'm actually part of the public beta, not the developer preview. So I just went to the public beta download from Apple, it is currently downloading. Will this version be the GM candidate being discussed in this thread or is it an older beta version?

Pre-release OS X 10.10 build 14A388a for developers, not public beta

… second golden master candidate of OS X Yosemite to developers … 14A386a …

… third golden master candidate of OS X Yosemite to developers …

Build number for GM3 is 14A388a.

… the public beta download from Apple, it is currently downloading. Will this version be the GM candidate being discussed in this thread or is it an older beta version?

The most recent public beta appears to be 14A386b (from around the same time as second GM candidate 14A386a).

The current beta for developers is more recent: 14A388a.

Ok so the public beta I am downloading, if I install this as a fresh install, will I just update when the final version is released, or do I need to reinstall the final all over again?

Good, that restores some confidence. I'm not a developer or anything so just have to go by what I see on these testing threads. So from just the regular guy, thanks!!
