prednisone can go to hell as far as im concerned. i gained so much ****ing weight...oh my god.

Same here... this last round I've taken a shining to massive doses of caffeine to try and fight the urge to eat.

This is an interesting thread. I was surprised to see so many opioids and benzodiazepines. The comments on prednisone were also enlightening. It is a medicine that I prescribe faily often, though not often at doses that would cause any of the effects above ascribed.

I recently started a blood pressure medication. Even the lowest dose, half of what I usually prescribe for patients, made me feel totally knocked out. I could barely function. After continuing to take it for a couple days, I have fully adjusted and am no longer suffering these adverse effects.

Clearly adverse effects do not always wear off. I took a medication at one point for anxiety, and I could not shake the side effect of poor sleep. If there's one thing that makes anxiety worse, it's sleeplessness!

As for plants being better than meds, I don't see much difference, other than the fact that they are not regulated by the FDA. IN the US, this means that if you buy herbal supplements, it's hard to know what you're getting. The whole "it's natural" benefit doesn't move me. Lots of natural things are known to cause death or suffering when ingested.

Do you start tapers at 40mg? Heck I even have problems at 20mg.

I rarely prescribe more than 5mg daily for any extended duration, and even that I reserve it for people who's bodies don't naturally make enough of the equivalent hormone (cortisol). The adrenal glands, which sit atop the kidneys, make cortisol, to help deal with stress. If one has impaired adrenal function, 5mg of prednisone is generally enough to replace the amount of cortisol needed in a day with average physical stress. In times of severe stress such as overwhelming infection or major surgery, the requirement can go up as much as 10-fold. Yet in the unstressed state, even 5mg may be too much for a patient with adrenal insufficiency. Since long-term use of prednisone and other medications like it can have negative effects on bone density, blood pressure, sugar metabolism amongst other things, I always try to use as little as possible.

There are many other medical uses for prednisone, including cancer chemotherapy, lung diseases, and autoimmune diseases. Of these, higher doses are generally seen, sometimes in excess of 1000mg daily! On the other hand, the duration of need for the medicine is often shorter in these settings, so the adverse effects I mentioned above may or may not be applicable. In such settings, the dose may far exceed that of the most-stressed adrenal function.

Hope that helps to clarify things. Certainly you are not alone in having difficulty tolerating 20mg of prednisone.

I smoked 40.00 worth of herion all day and night, and still fell it as I type. I had never done it before, and will never do it again. Why? You should have seen some of the other customers lined up to buy. Sick, addicted, and begging for a front.

Erm.. I don't think that's the kinda drugs we're talking about.
They are all the same, even the illegal ones. They are all trying to make you feel better in some way or form.

Hey I get 5mg of morphine via IV for my migraines...
and I take tylenol 3's for my joint pain.
Lots of my friends have recommended I use pot to deal with both problems.
they obviously havent done their research, Pot makes migraines worse...
this has been shown by a number of studies. secondly, people forget some of pot is grown with pesticides, OK here in BC not so much but elsewhere you need the chemicals to deal with the variety of creatures that will try to eat it, the reason I mention this is my second cousin has advanced rheumatoid arthritis, he is only 30 , he has been smoking pot to cope with the pain and it was making him sicker, it turns out he has pesticide poisoning from the government grown pot.

As to the people who advocate the use of natural products for pain managment versus pills/injections. Plants dont create this stuff for our personal use, they use it as a toxin to keep other stuff from eating it...

Some people are really clueless as to what drug and herbals are, my former naturopath prescribed a white willow extract for me even though I told her I had a severe allegry to aspirin. she insisted becuase it was natural I would not have any problems.

i just got all 4 wisdom teeth chopped out ouch that sucked
but they did give me vikes :)
they help alot and if you take the 3 throughout the day you become very relaxed, today was my 1st day off of them its just not the same :(
i do have a few leftover ;)

to the post above pot wont help your migranes
but to those who are high strung and need relaxed pot will do you well

didn't work at all for me when i was in the hospital. ugh i have headache now

I have yet to have to take any drugs on a regular basis, and I have never been put on pain killers. However, high blood pressure runs in the family. My father started taking high blood pressure medicine at the age of 21, and that is just a few years away for me. Apparently my blood pressure has been kind of high the recent times it has been taken, and though a healthy diet and exercise are a large part of controlling high blood pressure, it won't do everything, and so I suppose pills will come. I am not looking forward to that.

For headaches, I often wake up in the morning with a headache and I try not to take anything unless it really gets to bothering me, and usually it doesn't but sometimes it will bother me again mid-afternoon or in the evening. It isn't every day, but it is enough to notice. When I was getting the mid-afternoon headaches at school, before I got glasses my parents thought that is what was causing them. Apparently I did need glasses, because I couldn't pass the vision exam at the DMV, but even now with glasses I still get the headaches at times. I don't complain often about such things, but since we were on the subject I thought I would bring it up.

Hypertension can cause headaches.
Caffeine withdraw will cause headaches, especially in the morning.

Excellent, the rest of my meds came today! They're a week late but hey, at least they're here! :D

Of course this means I'm going to become a raging bitch over the next few weeks but after it settles down its all good. :)

Great, now I have to wait a few more days since I ordered the wrong length needle. :(

Eh, I've waited this long I suppose I can hold out, its just frustrating when they're right in front of you but you don't have the right equipment to take them properly. :(
