The PPI is a little bit better on the 42MM Apple Watch so yes a little bit better than the 38MM
What is your source for this? I just did a quick & dirty DPI calculation and got the same (approximately) DPI for both. We aren't 100% sure of the screen (actual display area) yet but they are believed to be 38mm @1.5" and 42mm@ 1.7".
42mm 1.7" 390x312=293DPI
38mm 1.5" 340x272=291DPI
If this is the case they are probably the exact same DPI and just different resolution/sizes.
Who really knows besides Apple Corprate and manufacturersI was just guesstimating anyways.
I want the 42mm Space Grey Apple Watch sport! That thing is awesome. I just hope I can afford the 42mm on launch day...
Does anyone know if the Gold edition can use the straps from the Standard version?

Apple will sell about 200 million iPhones over the next year. They'll probably sell 60 million next quarter alone. Plus, the Watch will work with about 200 million existing iPhones. Granted, there will be a lot of overlap between the 200 million existing iPhone owners and the 200 million or so that will be sold over the next year, but there will be some new growth.
My point is that even if a small fraction of iPhone owners get a Watch, there is a potential for Apple to sell ten million or more of them. That would be significant. No, it isn't the "next iPhone" but it could very significant over time.
