Yes it looks horrid, but it says it's simply a 3D printed prototype.

Agreed, even I would of made it look a bit better even if it was simply a prototype of the general concept, but there is nothing wrong with the concept itself if it's done in a very nice high quality manner.

The other company showing their concept off here, which looks a million times better, but this is a render so that's easy to make look nice, without actually making anything physical.

As I say, if it's done really well, and made well, then I'm fine with the concept.
Anything that gives customers more options is a good thing, and if you don't like the idea, then that fine also, just stick with the official ones.

All good for customers :)

There is nothing Apple can do to prevent 3rd party accesory makers from coming out with $5-10 bands for the Apple Watch. It's happening whether they like it or not.....just like the thousands of case makers for the iPhone. It is a whole industry in itself.

Actually, I would not be surprised, if the connection between the watch and band may be more than just mechanical. I expect some sort of "authentication" that a watch is properly attached to a "certified/official" band.

I can't see it.
THis would essentially be DRM for a physical item that has no electronic parts inside it.

the uproar would be tremendous, simply out of principle. consumers hate 'DRM' style limitations for no purpose other than to limit choice.

That would be both stupid and outrageous, if they prevented 3rd party straps, or gone after to shut down 3rd party strap efforts.

It's a flippin strap. Let people put on whatever they like, however hideous.

Like cases for phones.

I didn't say that I'd agree with it.

What made me think this was a possibility was an article mentioned on MacRumors about a week ago that suggested that only certain bands would be available for each model. Of course, that was just a rumor.

Again, I am certainly not saying it will happen, just that it wouldn't shock me.

Why invest in this Kickstarter when there will be LOTS of other manufacturers that will be on the market long before this Click (and likely cheaper)? It's a nice idea but over 80% of Kickstarter projects are delivered late and a large percentage not at all.

Like everyone else they'll have to wait until it's released to get one and take final measurements and make sure everything good. The difference is that it's a Kickstarter project so they won't have the experience to rapid prototype and have it to market in days rather than the months it'll likely take.

It's cool that they want to but big companies are going to release these MUCH quicker and likely better quality.

Errrr.

My link is this: http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/introducing-standap-the-standard-strap-adaptor-for-apple-watch

Your link is to fried chicken.

Now I'm confused!

two more different links to the same item I linked to, just in case there is some funny UK / USA link redirection going on:

I don't think that there's much Apple can do to put a stop to third party developers making something that happens to work with the Apple Watch.

As others have said, yes this prototype does look cheap, but it's simply a proof of concept design, I am sure the final version will look much better.

Other than that - I agree. It makes the watch ugly? Then don't buy it. One of the advantages of Apple's phones being pretty much the most popular smartphones of their generation is that there are tons of accessories and hardware available, in any price range. I like the apple leather case for my iphone 6 Plus but also use $2 plastic covers on my iPads and $2 silicone keyboard covers on my MacBooks, as opposed to the $30(?) one in the apple store. As long as there's nothing electric involved, it's all good (and I wouldn't rely on my cheap Smart Cover knock off to be strong enough to pick an iPad up with it)

The IndieGoGo project mentioned in the Hodinkee article was obviously shut down due to pressure from Apple...

Great idea, I'm sure the final product will be much nicer than the 3D printed prototype. I'm not sure I'd be interested in backing this kickstarter though, I would bet money other manufacturers that don't need a kickstarter campaign will make them too.

My buddy got one for Android Wear (the 360 I believe) and he loves it. It was rubbing away where the band connected and the adapter made it better.

Click allows customers to truly personalize the Apple Watch to match their style and at a fraction of the cost of Apple's Watchbands.

"At a fraction of the cost of Apple's Watchbands, even though we have no idea what that cost will be. We must be frickin' psychic"

Fixed it

doesn't take a genius to realize that everything Apple sells (accessory-wise) is going to be ridiculously expensive.

but feel free to continue to be a snob on macRUMOR forum by demanding FACTS.

if they wanted to prototype something for show and to get people to contribute they could have at least done it in aluminum or stainless. any machine shop in the world could knock out that adapter in 10 minutes in polished stainless. this looks like some kid got excited with his new maker-bot.

Apple took 4 years to design the Apple Watch.
These guys took 4 minutes to create the band...

The vast MAJORITY of watches sold are < $5 Quartz ones made in China for kids... The watch is "done" technology. Watch bands for regular folk are a "commodity" buy like shoelaces or hair ties. I haven't even owned a watch in 15+ years because I always have and electronic clock nearby blinking "12:00". Expensive watches are upper-middle-class trinkets. If Apple is going to sell WATCH to the iPod crowd, then JonnyI better get ready for artistic disappointment.
